Cultural and Moral Values Values of Greek Sarakatsani

I have purchased this book twice in my life which lets you know that I treasure its contents. The first time was in 1964 and I was interested in learning about these special nomadic tribes of shepherds in Northern Greece. The writing fits into what one expects of ethnographies. It explains the social rules and customs of an ancient people who have survived into modern times. Another book which discusses the Sarakatan sheperds is Patrick Leigh Fermor's "Roumeli: Travels in Northern Greece". If you are serious about what you want to learn about these Northern Greek shepherds, start with Campbell's book fnd then read Fermer's book as a 1966 travelogue. It is amazing to see two ways of viewing these nomads and the ways they live.

Very well writen and seriously documented anthropological study on the structure and manifestations of family bond consciousness as against general group conciousness in a nomadic ethnic group in Greece. A very valuable, and unique in its kind, anthropological document on root orginins of Western greco-hellenic culture.
