Horse Nations: The Worldwide Impact of the Horse on Indigenous Societies Post-1492, by Peter Mitchell

The Native American on a horse is an archetypal Hollywood image, but though such equestrian-focused societies were a relatively short-lived consequence of European expansion overseas, they were not restricted to North America's Plains.

Horse Nations provides the first wide-ranging and up-to-date synthesis of the impact of the horse on the Indigenous societies of North and South America, southern Africa, and Australasia following its introduction as a result of European contact post-1492. Drawing on sources in a variety of languages and on the evidence of archaeology, anthropology, and history, the volume outlines the transformations that the acquisition of the horse wrought on a diverse range of groups within these
four continents. It explores key topics such as changes in subsistence, technology, and belief systems, the horse's role in facilitating the emergence of more hierarchical social formations, and the interplay between ecology, climate, and human action in adopting the horse, as well as considering how far
equestrian lifestyles were ultimately unsustainable.

Review
As well as offering a template for the melding of historical, anthropological and archaeological data, methods and perspectives, Horse Nations is a substantial contribution to the study of borderland environments, middle grounds and hybrid societies. It is also a major addition to the field of horse history Times Literary Supplement, Peter Coates essential reading for all those interested in the study of human-animal relations, offering valuable access to documentary, iconographic, and bibliographic sources taken from colonial and contemporary history, archaeology, and anthropology. Messias Basques, Current Anthropology a long awaited work that fills a significant lacuna in equine literature. The book adeptly mines an abundance of relevant, but often previously unrecognized, geographic, archaeological, ethnographic and historical references to reconstruct the complex conditions that grew out of the appearance of the horse in North and South America, South Africa and Australasia from the late 15th century on. Eloquently woven, the story unfolds in a captivating manner that expertly leads the reader through the tangled web of history like a native guide through a rainforest ... this volume certainly will not disappoint. It has the ingredients to become an oft-referenced guide for historic periods in which the horse burst out of Eurasia and surprised countless indigenous peoples with its peculiar looks and amazing swiftness. It shall, no doubt, earn a favorite spot in the libraries of equine experts and enthusiasts internationally. Sandra L. Olsen, Journal of African Archaeology Horse Nations provides the first in-depth synthesis of the impact that horses had on indigenous groups located on the periphery of European colonialismin the post-1442 period ... presents interesting comparative fodder for researchers studying the adoption of new commodities or domesticates from any time period and also to those interested in exploring the diverse ways indigenous societies interacted with colonial processes. Sarah Newstead, Medieval Archaeology

By far the best available history of native peoples adapting to and incorporating horses into their cultures.
By lyndonbrecht
This is the best available book on this subject. Yes, it is an academic study (each chapter is followed by a notes section), but I find the writing to be quite good and the whole book well-written and an extremely informative read. The book has many illustrations, some of them rare period photos, and some of the black and white photos of representative landscapes were a bit blurry and not so useful. There's a nice section of color plates, as well. The author's overall approach is to blend history (drawn partly from contemporary accounts, a particularly rich source for the Southern Cone), ethnography and archaeology into his narrative.

I would quibble a little with the title. The book is only nominally "worldwide" because two "continent" sections are brief. He looks at Australia, South Africa and New Zealand rather quickly, with the main portion of the book on North and South America. The South African section has a too cursory account of the fascinating story of how some groups became mounted and in effect formed a new people (much as happened in areas of the Americas). Perhaps that will be another book.

In the long portion about North America, he discusses particular areas, quite varied in responses to horses and in ecosystem (he gets a bit into how horses altered these, not enough covered for my taste). These include the Southern plains, the Great Basin, the Pacific Northwest and California. Not all readers will agree, but I found the section on the Comanches the best, and found his comparison between the Metis (Canadian) and the Comancheros (New Mexican) to be especially interesting.

In the equally long portion about South America, he covers in most detail Guajira (a peninsula in Venezuela with an especially formidable mounted people called the Wayuu, who remained independent until nearly 1900. He also covers in great detail the Chaco region (centering on what is now Paraguay) and the Pampas area. The detail is excellent and the accounts of the various people are the best I have read (I don't read Spanish, so there are probably superb accounts I am unaware of).

He covers in all several dozen peoples. One aspect is that the encounter with horses altered old systems in many ways and in effect produced new ethnicities from the old (much the same happened elsewhere; see the work of Richard White on the Great Lakes region of the US, fore example).

The book has an interesting list of tribal names as they were known to English and Spanish speakers, and the words they use to identify themselves.

Scintilating topic, poor book
By B. Kling
This book has a great topic and it should have been tremendous. Instead it is pedantic and poorly written. The author would have been a great research assistant but the writing should have been left to someone with at least a little skill as an author and storyteller. It is written by one of those British academics who think commentaries on squabbles among academics are so so fascinating and quaint that they should receive more focus than the many stories of horse cultures, most of which are replaced with abstract categories and lists of poorly defined terms. I have no personal stake in any of this. Just a disappointed reader. Considering that it is an unusually expensive ebook it is best avoided.
