Review of Fourth Edition (2014) – An excellent “basic” source of info with a really useful CD-ROM
By Steve Ramm
While I usually review CDs and DVDs as well as entertainment related books here on Amazon, in my major occupation, I am a CPA with over 40 years of work in the Nonprofit field. I am also Treasurer of a Nonprofit so I feel qualified to provide an accurate review of this book. This particular volume was sent to me by Amazon as part of their “Vine Reviewer” program.
The “Dummies” series has sure grown since 1991 when Dan Gookin authored “DOS for Dummies”. There are now over 1800 (!) “… for Dummies” titles.
This particular volume is the 4th Edition , publioshed in early 2014. It’s not clear what parts have been updated or revised.
The authors - a Senior Program Officer for a Foundation and a grant writing instructer at San Francisco Stare University – do a really nice job of covering a wide area of subjection – such as financial reporting, fund raising and maintaining running board and comkittee meetings (as well as taking minutes) for those who are involved in currently existing non-profit. There is a section on start ups as well.
The really useful tool is the enclosed CD-ROM with lots of helpful files and templates – keyed to the 21 chapters in this 366-page softbound volume.
This is not the “only” book you will need to start and run a non-profit (there are other books -mostly by competing publisher NOLO Press – that go into more details on Fund Raising, Financial Reporting and even starting a new tax-exempt organization, but this one is easy to read for the “lay person” and well organized. I’d recommend it.

I wish I had this book five years ago when I was researching starting an 501(c)3.

I can't imagine a book that could provide any more FACTS about starting a non-profit. It is not an easy endeavor as I found when I was planning my own start-up, having worked in the social service field as a highly successful grantwriter. I am a 'creative type' and really hate the tedium of filling out forms, documents, registrations, licenses, etc. This book give a very good step by step explanation on how to do it. Nevertheless, note the title doesn't say anything like 'Easy guide to starting a non-profit' because there IS no easy way. Of course, you can't learn about such a complex topic from a book, but this one is handy as a reference guide. What it lacks--and that's not the fault of the book--is the 'personal' side of operating a non-profit that one can only get to know by operating in the non-profit world. Whether you love filling out forms neatly and 'get off' on professionally-looking documents, or whether you just want to find most practical way to get through the bean counting aspect of non-profits, this book is excellent as is its accompanying CD

Get your feet on the ground
By M. Stone
This book is full of the realities of running a nonprofit. Sure, there are a million little nuanced things you will learn in the process, and all of those can't be in a book. But what this book does, is creates the lattice, framework if you will, on which you will hang all of those new concepts and skills on as you learn and grow your nonprofit organization.
The included CD ROM is really worth the price of entry here. On it you will find useful forms and templates which are very high quality. You can tell actual operators in the field have had their hand in the production of this volume due to the attention to real-world detail and the no B.S. way in which the information is laid out.
In addition to this book I would also suggest the following:
