About the Author
Leslie G. Eldenburg, PhD, is a McCoy-Rogers Fellow at the University of Arizona. She has also taught at California State University-Fresno. She received her MBA and PhD from the University of Washington. She passed the CPA exam in 1985 and has taught review courses for the CMA exam. Leslie has served as faculty advisor for an IMA student chapter and for the Multicultural Business Student Association. She received a number of awards recognizing her activities in teaching, student support, and as faculty advisor for student organizations. She is an active member of the American Accounting Association (AAA), the Management Section of the AAA, the IMA, and the Healthcare Financial Management Association. She has served on and chaired numerous committees within these organizations and currently is the Management Section's Secretary-Treasurer and co-chairs its Doctoral Consortium Committee. Before becoming an academic, she worked in hospital finance at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle, Washington. Her research interests include issues in healthcare and hospital accounting, and she has published in The Accounting Review, The Journal of Accounting and Economics, The Journal of Medical Decision Making, The Journal of Corporate Finance, The International Journal of Accounting, Information Systems Research, Healthcare Financial Management, and Controller's Quarterly. In addition, she currently serves on several editorial boards. Leslie has also co-authored chapters in Health Care Administration, The Encyclopedia of Accounting, and the Forthcoming Handbook of Management Accounting research, and Handbook of Cost Accounting.

Susan K. Wolcott, PhD, CPA, CMA, is an educational consultant with WolcottLynch Associates. Her consulting practice takes her to conferences and campuses around the world where she works with faculty and programs to support critical thinking development, competency assessment, and curriculum innovation. Her publication include Developing Critical Thinking Skills: The Key to Professional Competencies, an American Accounting Association Academic Partners Toolkit. She chaired the AICPA Core Competency Framework Curriculum Evaluation Task Force, developed the Taxonomy of AICPA Core Competencies, and authored numerous assessment materials for the AICPA Educational Competency Assessment Web site. Additional publications can be found in Issues in Accounting Education, Journal of Accounting Education, Assessment Update, IDEA Center Papers, and other journals. She is a member of the AAA, IMA, IIA, and Washington Society of CPAs, where she participates on the Consulting Services Committee. She previously served on the board of directors, as President of the Educational Foundation, and as Chair of the Education Committee of the Colorado Society of CPAs. She also served as Vice President of Membership for the Portland-Columbia Chapter of the IMA and was a program committee member and presenter for the AACSB Outcomes Assessment Seminar. She was previously on the accounting faculty at the University of Denver, where she received the MBA Core Diamond Award for teaching. She regularly teaches CPA and CMA review courses, and she ahs also taught courses at the University of Washington, Helsinki School of Economics-Mikkeli, Instituto de Empresa in Madrid, and J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. She worked in public accounting for ten years, including three years with Coopers & Lybrand (Portland, Oregon). She holds PhD and MS degrees in Accounting and Information Systems from Northwestern University and a BBA in Accounting from the University of Portland.

1st edition is superior

For this second edition, Focal press had Tom Sito write a new preface, a conclusion, and a few bare-bones entries on various types of computer/digital animation which are so basic as to be virtually worthless. The book also got a facelift, consisting of a color-coded header bar on every page which gives you the chapter and lesson titles, presumably to prevent any possibility of a reader getting lost in this slim little volume. It's possible I guess. Unfortunately, this header means that now all of the images have been shrunk by 10% in size and seem to have lost some clarity in printing as well, with more noticeable areas of fade out in the line work. I also find the text smaller and harder to read, as they have switched to a sans serif font.

For a similarly inscrutable reason, the design team attempted to position all of the text on the right hand page and all of the images on the left hand page if at all possible, contrary to the original design, and the result is several awkward layouts where the images and text no longer flow smoothly. The paper stock is now glossy and twice as heavy, but as I have noted, the image quality is worse, so I prefer my lighter, slimmer 2002 edition. Unless you really want to see pictures of steve buscemi getting mo-capped and president obama riding a unicorn, I suggest sticking with the first edition of this seminal animation book.

"A Prerequisite For All Animated Projects." Timing For Animation: A Critical Review

I received a comment from J Fella with regards to a comment that I made in reference to another book but one that has no correlation to the subject of this book. I can't for the life of me remember why I had mentioned it. Maybe it was because I was reviewing 6 film books that month and the one mentioned really, really impressed me.

This book, TIMING FOR ANIMATION, is more of a theoretical than applicable book. And, as such, it should be viewed in that context. Having this book for almost 2 years now, and picking it up on random occasions, I've had a change of heart about it's worth. But, since this book has been the foundation text for animators for almost 30 years, I felt (and still do feel) that we should have seen more examples of animated films whose success was, at least, in part attributed to this work. That omission makes it a 4-star and not a 5-star book.

Again, thanks to J Fella, for the constructive criticism, it is warmly received and needed.

TIMING FOR ANIMATION is a newly revised version of one of the film industries revered books on animation since it was first published in 1981. This second edition is essentially an addendum to the first edition and not an adjustment to the material.

*Timing For Animation is not exactly a thematic book on animation. It is a sub-topic. Timing For Animation is essentially a philosophical discussion about the execution of movement for any and all scenes within a project. You will not find within this book (nor should you expect) broad-based lessons on how to create animation or technical aspects of filmmaking.

Timing For Animation is used to determine the fluidity or as the authors stated, "what gives meaning to the movement." Directors, animators (and, by necessity, the auditing dept.) plan out scenes television program, commercial and feature film with these theories in mind. This sub-topic provides answers to questions like how fast or how slow will the execution of certain gestures affect the overall vision of the storyteller(s). When to move and when not to move? Where and when to insert gestures? How does the environment (natural elements) react to given situation?

**Also, there are slightly different rules for executing a scene ("mise-en-scene") for television work, commercial advertisement and feature-film projects. These differences are discussed within.

**** Timing For Animation is an important book that addresses the critical issue of the importance of fluidity in a scene. Thirty (30) years ago it was considered the only authority on the subject in print, however, this newly revised version has little to offer that than the previous version.

I'm recommending this book as an addendum to one's animation book collection. It should go hand-in-hand with any pre-visualization and pre-budgetary decisions for a given project.

What's the most important thing--Timing!--in animation?

This is an update of a classic 30-year-old book giving instruction on all aspects of timing for creating animated films. When I say "all aspects," I mean it talks about tools for developing the timeline of a piece, the various constraints of timing on various animated media (tv, film, etc.), drawing techniques to properly illustrate the timing of an animated character's actions, the interplay of the timing of dialogue and illustrated actions, etc. The preface indicates that a driving force for the new edition is the revolution of digital animation. I have not read the original edition, but the quantity of material included on digital animation seems relatively light, so I'm not sure how much was really added for this edition. However, keeping this book in print seems like a boon to animators, because it really does contain a wealth of information on this critical topic.

Give yourself plenty of time to read this book disguised as a zine.

This made #1 of my TOP LISTS OF ZINES of 2014. While this zine (it's not really a zine, it's more like a book) covers a lot of different genre of films, it still sticks mainly with its bread-and-butter: the horror genre. Mixed with some great original artwork and some rare ad mats, the writing is still the most important thing to me and Issue #4 doesn't disappoint. I love that we now have "print on demand" and while some zines look like they were designed by a blind man, EVILSPEAK gives the inside of their zine a nice professional sheen. I love this zine and if you would just give it a chance, you will, too. It's best that I don't reveal what's inside the pages. Sometimes the best surprise is opening up the cover. There are only four or five "print on demand" zines that I buy. This one is at the top of my list. Don't deny yourself a horror education. Buy this zine. Thank me later.

Love this magazine. Have every issue. It's right up there with Weng's chop! Reminds me of all the crazy stuff I watched in the eighties. Plus they seem to have the same experiences I had so it's relatable. Can't wait for the next issue!

This just might be the best fanzine issue (it's more like a book!) ever published. Articles on Satan's Children, The Witchmaker, Mattei's women in prison films, Loreley's Grasp, a HUGE retrospective of Ossorio's Blind Dead flicks, DUDE Werewolf's Shadow, The Deadly Spawn, Don't Go in the House, 200+ pages of greatness. No fat. No ScyFy channel movie review! Yeah, this is my kind of fanzine. (book)

A man I know who has survived thirteen years beyond his colon cancer diagnosis by following the food guidelines in this book recommended it to me. The book was written at least 20 years ago, but the recommendations it presents for using food to combat disease and maintain wellness generally line up with food recommendations health experts are making today. It is written from a fundamentalist Christian perspective, and that may be off-putting to some readers. I myself am Christian, but not a fundamentalist; and I was able to glean the nutritional information presented here without getting tangled up in any religious rhetoric.

One of the best books I've read

After being told about this book by my daughter, my wife and I read it and decided to incorporate the eating and lifestyle changes recommeded by Dr. Malkmus. What a difference in our lives. I have lost almost 15 pounds and my wife has had similar results. More important however, we both are feeling so much better with more energy. Not bad for only 25 days on the new eating plan. This book should be considered by anyone with health problems.
