Unfortunately, only a mixed bag

Dan Solin's previous works in this series demonstrated the wisdom of constructing a globally diversified investment portfolio comprised of low-cost stock and bond index funds in accordance with a long-term asset allocation suitable to your needs. Where Solin has fallen short in the past is in the translation of this approach to specific investment recommendations, such as his previous advice to avoid TIPS (U.S. Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities) and ETFs (exchange-traded funds).

In his latest book, Solin has apparently overcome his aversion to ETFs and utilizes several of them to construct his `SuperSmart' and `Smartest ETF' portfolios. Tragically, his bond recommendations fall woefully short of the mark. For example, Solin suggests investing 50 percent of the total bond allocation in the SPDR Barclays Capital Short Term International Treasury Bond ETF (BWZ), a relatively small, thinly traded ETF which allocates almost 15 percent of its holdings to the potentially risky bonds of Italy and Spain.

Investors would be better served consulting the books of William J. Bernstein, John C. Bogle, Larry Swedroe and others for specific investment recommendations consistent with this philosophy.

Great Book, I Wish I Had It Years Ago!

I am not sure what the previous reviewer is talking about. The book does not come with a CD which is true. It does come with a code so you can download all the audio files from the internet. I downloaded them all in less than 5 minutes and it was no problem at all. You get high quality mp3 files. That aside, this book is great. I have been playing for 40 years and the only soloing tool in my tool box was the major/minor pentatonic scale. You can only go so far with that. This book teaches you when and how to add other elements to your soloing so that your performance really pops! Now I have many different soloing "tools" at my disposal, and that gives a tremendous amount of depth to my performance. Putting in arpeggios, modes, and scales really gives you a whole new sound. My band mates have been impressed with the change in my playing. This book is not for the beginner but aimed more at both the advanced and intermediate player. The examples and backing tracks are very high quality. This is not just a book of useful licks to memorize, although there are many tasty licks given. It teaches you when and how to apply different devices (scales, modes, arpeggios) to soloing situations. I wish I had this instruction years ago.

Excellent resource for learning to play Blues Fusion lines!!! Audio samples are easily accessed from my Kindle Fire after creating a Hal Leonard account. I've only played a couple of examples but I'm very happy with what see. The author really knows his theory & can play a mean guitar. Be prepared to advance your skills because this book has some outstanding information!!!

This meticulous narrative of the rise of the cotton magnate James G. Boswell begins in the nineteen-twenties, when his family was driven from Georgia by boll-weevil infestations and brought its plantation ways to California's San Joaquin Valley. Not to be defeated by nature again, the Boswells leveed and dammed Tulare Lake, the largest body of fresh water west of the Mississippi, to the point of extinction. In its six-hundred-square-mile basin they grew cotton, while in Los Angeles office towers they built one of the country's largest agricultural operations, swallowing small farms and multimillion-dollar subsidies with equal vigor. Arax and Wartzman strive for evenhandedness but acknowledge the costs of Big Ag—such as evaporation ponds with selenium levels so high that ducks are born with corkscrewed beaks and no eyes, and the recurrent "hundred-year floods," stubborn attempts by the old lake to reassert itself.

In the early part of the twentieth century, his family moved from Georgia to California, where they drained one of the country's biggest lakes, Tulare Lake, and planted cotton. Soon their cotton empire became the richest and most technologically sophisticated on the planet. This book is many stories, all rolled into one epic. It's the story of the Boswells from the 1800s to the present day; of cotton farming in America; of California itself; and of the evolution of race relations as the country dragged itself out of the era of slavery and, not at all smoothly, into the modern era. Written in a lively style that matches the bigger-than-life qualities of its subject, the book is far more exciting than you might think the story of a cotton farmer would be. Great Read about a Mysterious Company

I've written about JG Boswell (BWEL) a couple of times here on MicroCapClub, but I finally finished reading the only book that gives a detailed history of the company and man behind it. JG Boswell is known as the country's largest farm (150,000 acres), which is located in California. The intrigue with the company isn't in the size of the farm, but how it got so large in the first place.

The farm itself is on an old lake bottom, what used to be Tulare Lake. 100 years ago this lake was the largest lake (600 sq miles) west of the Mississippi River, and it was drained dry by farming. The farm to this day continues to tap 15% of the river system/aquifer as irrigation. The true value of the farm even today isn't really the abundance of crops that are produced but in these water rights that are thought to be worth $10's of billions.

The company was started in 1921 by J.G. Boswell, and later run by J.G. Boswell II who is credited for the company's growth from 1952-1984 (died 2009). JG Boswell II was a very intelligent and influential businessman who even served on the board at General Electric (GE) when Jack Welch was CEO. Welch said of Boswell, "A very independent outside the mold thinker, just a maverick sort of a guy".

The book gives a fascinating account of the history of JG Boswell, and how environmentalists and the US government tried to step in and stop the company several times. The fact that the company still exists today is just a testament of sheer will power and leadership by JG Boswell II. The company is a very private company even though it is publicly traded. As in most cases, the more private a company or person is, the more intrigued outsiders are to learn more. The book was a great read and provides one of the only detailed accounts of this mysterious company.

Another Fine Chapter in California's History

This particular chapter details the rise of a farming empire in California's Central Valley. Coming from Greene County Georgia, the Boswell family built this empire largely on the backs of migrant labor and water--lots and lots of water. One other point: on the way to becoming one of the largest landowners in California, the Boswell's forever reshaped the landscape and drained Tulare Lake.

Prior to settlement, the Central Valley's river floodplain system nourished some 1.4 million acres of tule marshes and wooded wetlands. The draining of vast sweeps of wetlands along with the damming and channeling of four major rivers has altered the landscape in both a manner and at a scale that is, quite literally, unprecedented. If you wanted to focus on a single family/farming empire that played the biggest role in this alternation, then you could do no better than The King of California.

Tulare Lake lies near the southern end of California's Central Valley. The proximity of such a huge, seasonal lake to a large farming operation was a mixed blessing. During dry years, as the shoreline contracted, the land could be transformed to grow grain or row crops. In wet years, however, as the Sierra Nevada snow pack melted, the runoff of the Kings, Kaweah, Tule, and Kern Rivers filled this basin. The big runoff produced high flows into July and August, resulting in a vast and expanding lake shore. The flooded farmland resulted in less crops, less money... J.G. Boswell was determined to rein these waters in and convinced the Federal Government to help.

In an errant attempt to encourage small family farms, loopholes in the reclamation laws brought most of the land in the Central Valley under the control of a handful of private landowners. The Californian land barons went by the names of Henry Miller, J. G. Boswell, and "Cockeye" Salyer. The land around Tulare Lake eventually got folded into Boswell farming empire. In the final analysis, the Boswell's got the land, the water rights, and handed the tax-payers the bill for the construction of Pine Flat Dam on the Kings River.

I feel a bit of guilt when I throw on a mass produced cotton T-shirt (e.g., I can buy a three-pack for under ten dollars). Because this cheap cotton underwear really isn't that cheap. Mass produced cotton uses a lot of water. In fact, to grow a single T-shirt takes 257 gallons of water. If you own a piece of cotton underwear, chances are pretty good it's fibers came from land in California's Central Valley. And by default, you can be sure the Boswell family grew it. The King of California tells the interesting story of how the Boswells became the single largest grower of cotton in the United States.

Well written and entertaining.

All in all I feel the book brought out the good and bad man taming and controlling the Tulare Lake basin. The mixed basket of intended and unintended consequences strong willed individuals and politicians. In the end, poor public policy mixed with a driven group of individuals concentrated wealth and power in the hands of a few.

A great history of California water and water policy.

Despite setbacks, the economic "miracles" achieved by many Asian countries in the latter 20th century have been impressive. This entertaining and thoughtful book invites the reader to consider East Asia's other miracle: its dramatically low rates of crime, divorce, drug abuse, and other social ills. T.R. Reid, an NPR commentator and former Tokyo bureau chief for the Washington Post, lived in Japan for five years, and he draws on this experience to show how the countries of East Asia have built modern industrial societies characterized by the safest streets, the best schools, and the most stable families in the world.

Reid credits Asia's success to the ethical values of Chinese philosopher Confucius, born in 551 B.C., who taught the value of harmony and the importance of treating others decently. This is not a new perception--Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore and others have rather heavy-handedly invoked it to claim moral superiority over the West--but the author's vivid anecdotes strengthen its relevance. Public messages constantly remind Asian citizens of their responsibilities to society. To enhance a sense of belonging, civic ceremonies encourage individuals' allegiance to a greater good; across Japan, for example, April 1 is Nyu-Sha-Shiki day, when corporations officially welcome new employees, most of whom remain loyal to their company for life. In this breezy homily, Reid, an NPR commentator who was the Washington Post's Tokyo bureau chief for five years, offers a look at what he calls Asia's "social miracle" (as opposed to its once vaunted economic growth). The nations of East Asia, he reports, have "the safest streets, the strongest families, and the best schools in the world." Along with their enviably low rates of crime, divorce, unwed motherhood and vandalism, countries like Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand boast a burgeoning middle class, a general aura of civility and a more egalitarian distribution of wealth than the U.S. enjoys. Like many other Asia watchers, Reid attributes this social cohesiveness to a shared set of core values?discipline, loyalty, hard work, a focus on education, group harmony, etc.?that he traces back to the Confucian classics. Yet Reid, now the Post's London bureau chief, readily admits that the East Asian model of Confucian prosperity has glaring flaws: most cities he visited were drab and ugly; Singapore is a "self-righteous and thoroughly intolerant place controlled by a small clique." Reid, who transplanted his family of five from a small Colorado town to Tokyo, serves up amusing anecdotes and cross-cultural observations (his two daughters enrolled in a Japanese public school), but his report reads like one long radio spiel and covers well-trod terrain. After gently berating Westerners for more than 200 pages, he gets to eat his rice cake and have it, too: Confucian values and our own Judeo-Christian morality, he concludes, are basically the same, differing mainly in nuance. Using anecdotes of his family's five-year sojourn in Tokyo and his own observations of Asian customs, media, and corporate practices, Washington Post bureau chief Reid offers a welcome expos? of modern East Asia on the eve of what he terms "the Asian century." He contrasts Asia's ways with the West's in an effort to explain why the United States in particular does not measure up to the East on social stability indicators such as violent crime, theft, and single parenthood. Reid gives modern Asian trends a historical basis, with particularly keen insights into European imperialism's legacy there. Confucius's life and subsequent influence in both the East and West are illuminated. An appendix of concise, almanac-like entries for each East Asian nation includes brief historical backgrounds, economy, size, current political trends, and sociopolitical projections for the future. The author seems to have done little investigation into all of the forces at work in Japanese society. He simply regurgitates the Nihonjinron stereotypes that make discourse on Japan all the more difficult.

Low crime? Sure. On the other hand did he once mention the abhorrent practices of police brutality, forced confessions, broken kneecaps and busted skulls, 98% conviction rates, no habeas corpus, fudging of crime statistics and prison conditions that essentially amount to death sentences?

Low divorce rate? Until recently women were not entitled to a dime of their husbands money upon divorce. Now that they are, divorce rates are skyrocketing.

Contrary to what the author claims, Japan is not a homogeneous and harmonious society as any educated sociologist specializing in Japan knows. There are very distinct regional cultures, generational differences and dialects which greatly influence people's eating habits, language, thought patterns, housing styles, culturally influenced behavior etc...

There are great income and educational disparities. Minority, ethnic and gender issues DO exist however they often do not receive the attention from the media that they might elsewhere. One reason may be that Japan's freedom of the press is very low in comparison with other developed nations and groups fighting hard battles for recognition and rights are too often swept under the rug and ignored.

Any half-educated economist could tell you the real ECONOMIC factors that were behind Japan's boom and why it was not based upon Confucianism and "Asian Values". Lifetime employment is dying because companies found out the hard way that it does not work. There have been massive layoffs and a growing unemployment rate.

I could go on for pages citing realities and facts that contradict all of Reid's laughable stereotypes.

Asia has just as many problems as the west. They are equally as complex and difficult to solve. There is no Confucian quick-fix and anyone who says there is is seriously deluded.

Before making sweeping generalizations about the 120 million varied and diverse inhabitants of the islands of Japan, Reid needs to take a closer look at not only the omote (surface), tatemae (facade), and soto (outward) phenomenon of Japanese society (already covered in Japanese and foreign media ad nauseam), but its more intricate ura (undersurface), honne (true intentions), and uchi (inner) undercurrents.

If you are looking for a real balanced and objective view of Japanese society that neither overly-praises or degrades it, check out Yoshio Sugimoto's "An Introduction to Japanese society" which is a work that is actually based in reliable evidence, research, and solid conclusions.

Entertaining but Superficial Cross-Cultural Study

This is a mostly entertaining and enlightening study from Reid, a foreign correspondent who has lived in Japan and traveled throughout Asia. Reid's concern is not the economic success of East Asia, but what he calls the "social miracle." This would be the great civility, politeness, high educational standards, low crime, and all-around successful social stability of Eastern Asian nations. Reid cites the deep cultural influences of Confucianism as the key to this success. Examples are the Confucian ideals of community, shame, and encouragement, which all contrast directly with the Western ideals of individuality, guilt, and punishment. Reid delivers these revelations in a very enlightening fashion and his writing is quite enjoyable, especially when talking about his Tokyo neighbor, the immensely polite and courteous Matsuda-san. However, Reid also learns that the most basic Confucian tenets of hard work and virtue are also core Western tenets, and that the West would be greatly improved by a return to those values. The main problem here is Reid's quite superficial interpretations of both Eastern and Western societies - he often talks like a sociologist but clearly isn't. In Japan especially, Reid probably saw mostly the politeness that the natives save for visitors, with little or no direct experience of real social problems. The book ends with very flimsy solutions, mostly concerning abstract concepts like morality, for the West to integrate Eastern concepts to everyone's social benefit. So beware of these superficialities in this otherwise enjoyable study of cultures that are both vastly different, but more alike than you might think.

No, an old Japanese guy lives next door.

This is one of those books that is hard to review, particularly in terms of stars. To me it teeters on the edge of three stars to four. Three seems harsh, but in ways appropriate.
In "Confucius Lives Next Door" T.R. Reid attempts to expose and explain East Asia's 'second miracle'. The first miracle being the enormous economic gains of the last half-century that started in Japan and now encompass most of the Pacific side of that continent. The second miracle, in Reid's view, is the social stability, low crime rate, and overall quality of life that can be found throughout East Asia. Boiling a complex issue that spans billions of people, thousands of years, dozens of languages and scores of cultures, he concludes that Confucius is to blame.
If that sounds overly simplistic, it is because it is; and inherently that is the problem with the book. Once again here we have a person trying to explain another culture(s) in simplistic historical solutions that fit many and divergent facets of a large swath of people.
Yet, in certain ways Reid is on to something. Just as Western thinking finds its philosophical underpinnings in the influence of Plato, with a liberal sprinkling of hundreds of thinkers along the way, Asia -- particularly countries historically influenced by China -- owe the core of their philosophical and social thinking to good old Confucius, with a liberal sprinkling of hundreds along the way. That much is good. Reid had me at the Plato-Confucius comparison, and his chapter about the life of Confucius was educational. Most of his ideas appear to have been instigated by conversations with his next-door neighbor, Mr. Matsuda, who seems to be the wizened neighbor we all wish we had. But in this book I fear Reid has ordered more lemon chicken than he can eat in one sitting. His examples mostly draw upon his experiences from living in Japan for five years, and from examples gleaned from second-hand sources about other Asian countries. If these are meant to be end-all examples, then they do not work. Though I also feel that Reid was using the trips to an elementary school and to the Toyota plant and elsewhere to illustrate points and to tell stories. This is fine and dandy, but it does not serve such a high-powered thesis completely; so it must be read with a pinch of forgiveness. Anybody who bothers with these studies will know that it is not all sugar drops and robotic dogs in Asia and that there are actual social problems as divergent as the cultures of each country highlighted. To gloss over these problems and to smudge the lines between cultures (I know of few people who would argue that Japan and Singapore use similar methods to keep their streets safe) is acceptable only in a work that admits its simplicity. The final chapter of "Confucius Lives Next Door" attempts this in certain degrees to limited satisfaction.
That being said, I have been a fan of T.R. Reid for a while now. His articles in National Geographic are always very lucid, and his sense of humor is a trait more people need to have who write on topics like these. For a while though he seems to abandon the humor and go pseudo-academic for good stretches of this book, which I think works only part of the time. Read this book as a collection of stories and it is worthwhile. But anybody who has spent more than a few months living in East Asia will feel they could have written half of this book.

Great Review for the Shelf

This is an excellent review of all the material you need for the NBME psych shelf exam. It is also great for step 2 as well. I would say that the book is on the lengthy side, but it can be helpful if you are reading throughout your rotation. What it doesn't include are several of the genetic issues like Prader-Willi syndrome and the peripartum effects of some drugs like alcohol or phenytoin. I would make sure to review those on the exam. This also lacks extensive detail on drug toxicities and withdrawal effects. I would look into other resources for that as well. Overall, I highly recommend this book to review for the shelf. It seems that every med student was using this as their source.

Kuby Immunology: The bible of Immunology

I have six of the seven editions of the Kuby Immunology. It remains the best text book for budding immunologists for both undergrad and graduate level. It is especially useful for those of us working immunologists that find it difficult to keep pace with how rapidly our science is expanding in our level of understanding immunity. With advancements in molecular biology, we are constantly needing to review how we understand the immune system. Kuby is no longer just for undergrads. It also caters nicely for graduates and post-grads as well as it brings in the latest knowledge of immunology in a concise accessible manner for those of us applied immunologists.

Nice Update to a Classic Text

This is still a great textbook.

I used a much earlier edition of this text as an undergrad and it really helped me understand the basic science behind the complexities of the immune system. The 7th edition substantially changes the approach but it is still written by people that teach undergrad immunology and understand the concerns of students just beginning to learn this complex subject matter.

This edition adds much to the older version that I learned used doing especially well with the introduction of the microbiome and new regulatory cell types and tolerance.

A very well organized and highly informative book on immunology

Although a highly detailed book and the information is challenging for the memory, this book is written in a very comprehensible way and has all that a resident/specialist needs to know about immunology. Too much complicated for medical students or USMLE exams!

Fantastic Reissue of "Life" Biography!

This comes in a soft cover or hard cover, and I opted for the soft cover to get the feel of the original. This is an amazing "magazine". I should call it a book, because it is so packed full of information and pictures that I had not seen before. I really didn't expect that, but I couldn't put it down until I had gone all the way through it, and I plan to go through it again this weekend. Of course, it isn't as full of information as some of the books I have that are 200-400 pages long, but I really love what is included. I've been to several of Sir Paul's concerts, and tend to collect more of his memorabilia and works, but I think that this will end up being one of my favorite books about John. Very nice!

plenty of pictures

Even though this book was second hand ex-NY public library the first 18 fell out. I still found the book very informative with plenty of pictures of John covering all of his life both in colour and black & white all. I have bought many items from Amazon over the years and have found the delivery & handing charges of £16.45 well above the average cost for the same sort of item.
