A Must Have Resource
By KPM
This book was given to us in our first year of dental school and I still reference it today, 15 years later. What is unique about this book is that it clearly illustrates, through shaded areas, where you may expect anesthesia to not only travel to, but how intense you may expect it to be. Not that giving local anesthesia is simple, but this book MAKES it simple through clear explanations. Anatomical drawings of nerves relative to bony landmarks as well as needle positioning are incorporated within one illustration at a time throughout the book and everything is tied up nicely with a "complication" section at the back of the book. In addition, the chemistry of locals as well as potential side effects are explained in the first chapters for beginners. One of my hygienists recently became certified to give local anesthesia in Massachusetts and found this book to be EXTREMELY useful.

Silence: A Novel (Picador Modern Classics), by Shusaku Endo

Shusaku Endo's classic novel of enduring faith in dangerous times, soon to be a major motion picture directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson, and Adam Driver

"Silence I regard as a masterpiece, a lucid and elegant drama."-The New York Review of Books

Seventeenth-century Japan: Two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to a country hostile to their religion, where feudal lords force the faithful to publicly renounce their beliefs. Eventually captured and forced to watch their Japanese Christian brothers lay down their lives for their faith, the priests bear witness to unimaginable cruelties that test their own beliefs. Shusaku Endo is one of the most celebrated and well-known Japanese fiction writers of the twentieth century, and Silence is widely considered to be his great masterpiece.

About the Author
Shusaku Endo, born in Tokyo in 1923, was raised by his mother and an aunt in Kobe where he converted to Roman Catholicism at the age of eleven. At Tokyo's Keio University he majored in French literature, graduating BA in 1949, before furthering his studies in French Catholic literature at the University of Lyon in France between 1950 and 1953. Before his death in 1996, Endo was the recipient of a number of outstanding Japanese literary awards: the Akutagawa Prize, Mainichi Cultural Prize, Shincho Prize, and the Tanizaki Prize, and was widely considered the greatest Japanese novelist of his time.

A Novel of Undeniable Power
By mp
"Silence" is an excellent novel. Comparisons between Shusaku Endo and British novelist Graham Greene are apt, as both deal with the relationships that develop between individuals, Catholicism, and the world. "Silence" is an extremely intense historical novel. While knowledge of Catholicism may be helpful for some of the situations and terminology, the issues of doubt and faith, in God and in people, are readily available to any reader.
"Silence" is set in sixteenth century Japan, where Portuguese missionaries must contend with traders from rival European nations and the persecution of Christians by Japanese feudal lords. The feudal lords want to drive Christianity out of Japan, and try to do so by torturing priests into apostasy, denying their faith. This is done symbolically by stepping on a "fumie," a Christian image, like a picture of Mary or a crucifix. Two Portuguese priests, Sebastian Rodrigues and Francis Garrpe, make a dangerous journey to Japan, both to locate and comfort Japanese converts, and to discover the truth about a supposed apostate priest, Ferreira.
"Silence" makes use of several narrative approaches, third person omniscient at the beginning and ending, while the middle portion of the novel is written in the style of a diary and letters from Rodrigues' point of view. The main protagonist, Rodrigues must deal with the validity of his faith, the propriety of the Christian mission in Japan, the suffering of Japanese converts, and the silence of God in the midst of so much hardship.
Rodrigues' trials are exacerbated by his physical and cultural isolation, as he and Garrpe are forced to conceal themselves in a small hut dug out of the side of a mountain near Nagasaki. Culturally, he must confront being in a nation whose language and customs are mostly alien and threatening to him. The most perplexing external difficulty Rodrigues faces is from an ambiguously motivated local named Kichijiro. Rodrigues' relationship with Kichijiro forces the priest into his deepest and most troubling reflections on faith and the Bible.
"Silence" was an absolutely fascinating read. The historical and cultural milieus of the novel are complicated by Endo's own background. Endo's perspective on Christianity and Catholicism in particular, as a Japanese writer, and writing about Japanese history forced me, at least, as a Westerner, to look at issues of faith and international relations from a radically different perspective than even the foreign-based novels of Graham Greene that I have read, like "The Heart of the Matter" or "The Power and the Glory," the latter of which is thematically very similar to Endo's "Silence". Overall, a tremendous and powerful novel.

A marvelous, soul-wrenching work
By Snickerdoodle
"Silence" towers above what passes for most religious fiction for its evocative and unflinching treatment of faith and suffering.
While the theology of pain has been touched on in much of Western literature, most of it recently seems either an apology for God's permitting suffering, rants against God for permitting suffering, or pep talks for believers going through suffering. Philip Yancey has provided a great service on the issue in his books on pain, but even they take a somewhat detached view. By contrast, Shusako Endo seems to write from within the terrible grasp of suffering in "Silence", one of the most moving novels I have ever read.
The plot centers around a band of Portugese priests who land in Japan in the 1600's to spread the gospel on a culturally and spiritually unfertile soil. Their theology is eventually challenged in ways that only persecution and suffering can do: can I carry on here? should I? can I forgive my tormentors? should I? Ultimately, they wrestle with public apostasy and with whether or not they could ever be forgiven if they commit such an act.
This is not a feel-good book by any stretch. It deals with failure, defeat, abandonment, pain, and the 'silence' of God through it all. But at the same time it opens the window wide on what the Man of Sorrows went through on our behalf and on how we need God's grace not because of our strength but because of our weakness. Highly recommended.

How can God remain silent?
By C. E. Stevens
This question, raised countless times by the main character Rodrigues, is just one of many theological issues that Endo explores in this highly emotional, extremely probing novel. The Christian period of Japan is regarded as a somewhat curious anomaly by the Japanese themselves, and is largely unknown in western circles. That Endo could weave so elegant a tale, using a foreign main character (there are few precedents in Japanese literature) and frequently changing narrative styles no less, is an accomplishment in itself.
"Silence" raises several theological points, but the two that stuck with me the most were the following: how can God remain silent despite the suffering of his people (a question no less relevant with the events going on in the world today), and secondly, is it possible that Christianity cannot "grow roots" in the "swamp" that is Japan. A Catholic himself, it is obvious that Endo has struggled over these questions himself, searching for answers. Is it possible to betray your faith but stay true to your God? Endo's frank look at questions like this is part of his universal success. It is amazing to consider that this book was a huge seller in Endo's native Japan, which itself is barely 1% Christian.
"Father, you were not defeated by me," Inoue says to Rodrigues. "You were defeated by this swamp of Japan." "No, no ... my struggle was with Christianity in my own heart" Rodrigues replies. Ultimately, Christian or non-Christian, no matter your age or nationality, faith comes down to these battles in the heart. Endo does a magnificent job depicting this, and Silence is an outstanding book because of it.

Burning Country: Syrians in Revolution and War, by Robin Yassin-Kassab, Leila Al-Shami

In 2011, many Syrians took to the streets of Damascus to demand the overthrow of the government of Bashar al-Assad. Today, much of Syria has become a warzone and many worry that the country is on the brink of collapse.

Burning Country explores the complicated reality of life in present-day Syria with unprecedented detail and sophistication, drawing on new first-hand testimonies from opposition fighters, exiles lost in an archipelago of refugee camps, and courageous human rights activists. Yassin-Kassab and Al-Shami expertly interweave these stories with an incisive analysis of the militarization of the uprising, the rise of the Islamists and sectarian warfare, and the role of Syria’s government in exacerbating the brutalization of the conflict. Through these accounts and a broad range of secondary source material, the authors persuasively argue that the international community has failed in its stated commitments to support the Syrian opposition movements.

Covering ISIS and Islamism, regional geopolitics, new grassroots revolutionary organizations, and the worst refugee crisis since World War Two, Burning Country is a vivid and groundbreaking look at a modern-day political and humanitarian nightmare.

Review
"Yassin-Kassab and Al-Shami want to keep faith with the original impulse of the Syrian revolution—their book is full of fascinating details about the early protest movements—and they also stress the importance of letting Syrians speak. The chief interest of Burning Country...is its inclusion of voices from the front lines. Burning Country lets us listen to many voices we aren’t likely to hear on the news." (New York Review of Books)

"?Those in search of perspective on Syria’s devastation should turn to Burning Country, by the reporter Yassin-Kassab and the activist al-Shami. Their book offers a knowledgeable, empathetic, morally lucid account of the revolt against the Assad regime and an explanation of why—to the horror of many of its supporters—it became a civil war. Burning Country avoids the easy indulgence of indignation; instead, it elicits the voices of many different Syrians involved in the uprising, acknowledging their suffering as well as their courage, intelligence, and humanity, while explaining the terrible choices that have been forced on them." (The Nation)

“Burning Country is both exposition and record of the people behind the Syrian uprising….Yassin-Kassab and Al-Shami work to undo the narrative traps that define popular perceptions of Syria, giving color to the individuals who have mounted alternatives for the country and whose stories are little known. What distinguishes the book from other reporting on Syria is its deep look at how cultural and intellectual production has evolved alongside the conflict.”

(Guernica)

"A number of gripping new books have recently been published that evocatively describe the grim trajectory of Syria’s uprising and war. Burning Country explores how Syria’s peaceful uprising gave way to armed insurgency and sectarian jihad. They offer a sympathetic portrait of a heroic uprising gone wrong, describing in all too painful detail the transformations wrought by armed groups and Assad’s brutality. This is an important, honest and insightful book, well worth anyone’s time." (Washington Post)

"In their new book Burning Country, journalist Yassin-Kassab and human rights activist Al-Shami provide a bracing and timely reminder that no matter how long the war rages or how unreachable a political settlement may appear, the world owes it to the Syrian peopl —especially the peaceful revolutionaries—to listen to their stories and support their cause. Burning Country is a portrait of the opposition, a movement of protest against Bashar al-Assad’s brutal regime, which has been nearly forgotten amid the humanitarian strife, factionalism, and power politics surrounding and driving the conflict."
  (Boston Review)

"This book provides an emotionally restrained history of the Syrian people’s struggle against the Assad regime. Yassin-Kassab and Al-Shami describe a bloody war between two enemies both claiming the soul of a nation. With the Syrian civil war as context, the reader is also presented with instructive and absorbing discussions of the struggles for power and over ideas within the forces claiming the revolutionary mantle. Although the account written in these pages is of a tragedy beyond most readers’ comprehension, it is a tragedy that will continue to be felt around the world, as refugees leave their ruined lives behind in search of some kind of living peace. [Burning Country] should be read by as many people as possible."
  (Counterpunch)

"Provides a comprehensive account of the Syrian revolution from its inception in 2011 to the present. Through interviews with Syrians from across the spectrum of society, the book charts the trajectory of the uprising from the grassroots civil society initiatives that lie at the core of the uprising to its militarization and sectarian polarization." (The Brooklyn Rail)

"It is in British-Syrian writers Yassin-Kassab and Al Shami’s Burning Country that we find a definitive people’s history of the uprising. The book explains in scrupulous detail the context of the uprising, the aims of the revolution, the regime’s brutal response, the causes of militarization, the rise of the Islamists, and the resilience of Syrian society through repression, war, and exile. Yassin-Kassab, Al Shami, and others have ensured that the answer to 'What do Syrians want?' is no longer a mystery." (Dissent)

"Judging from the news coverage, you’d think the Syrian conflict was about everyone but the Syrian people. Syrian perspectives have been almost entirely absent from conversations about the refugee crisis, ISIS and the fate of the Assad regime. Burning Country offers a compelling counter-narrative, rich with the voices of the Syrian people. Equal parts history and analysis, Al-Shami and Yassin-Kassab foreground the grassroots organizations and culture that have flowered in Syria since the revolution began, despite the Assad regime and ISIS’s attacks. Most illuminating is the authors’ discussion of the local councils that oversee the functioning of public services primarily in rebel-controlled territory, of which there are more than 400." (In These Times)

"As well as a non-orthodox telling of the conflict from the point of view of the activists and fighters who took part in the revolution, the book also speaks to the confusion and reluctance of western progressives to engage in the reality of Syria." (Middle East Eye)

"A work that gives a voice to the Syrian revolutionaries who are the political and moral descendants of the brigades that took up arms against Franco in the name of democracy and social justice." (New Politics)

"This is the best book yet interpreting the tragedies that have befallen Syria since the outbreak of civil war in 2011. It offers the best coverage of the war by two Syrian scholars and journalists who have participated in it. They describe the increasingly oppressive government of President Bashar al-Assad before the war.  They also analyze the inability of the secular nationalists to offer meaningful opposition due to societal, class, sectarian, religious, and geographical differences. Syria is, indeed, 'a burning country,' and it will continue to burn. Essential." (Choice)

"[Burning Country] really digs into the various stages and evolutions of the current conflict." (Megan Price, executive director of the Human Rights Data Analysis Group)

"Burning Country is poised to become the definitive book not only on the continuing Syrian conflict but on the country and its society as a whole. Very few books have been written on ‘the kingdom of silence’ that effectively capture how we all got here while not omitting the human voice, the country's heroes and heroines—a combination that is rare but essential for understanding the conflict and its complexities. Yassin-Kassab and Al-Shami have written a must-read book even as the conflict still rages to understand what happened, why it happened and how it should end." (Hassan Hassan, co-author of ISIS: Inside the Army of Terror)

"For decades Syrians have been forbidden from telling their own stories and the story of their country, but here Yassin-Kassab and al-Shami tell the Syrian story. Their words represent the devastated country which has denied them and their compatriots political representation. Burning Country is an indispensable book for those who wish to know the truth about Syria." (Yassin al-Haj Saleh)

"Burning Country could have been titled A People's History of the Syrian Revolution and War: it provides a view from below that constitutes the perfect antidote to geopolitical reductionism. This book is unique in its combination of first-hand material derived from fieldwork, factual and analytical rigour, and unshakable faith in the Syrian people's struggle for justice and dignity." (Thomas Pierret Lecturer, University of Edinburgh, Director of the Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World)

"By far the best account of the Syrian uprising yet. It is a comprehensive and nuanced analysis of a multifaceted geopolitical conflict and myriad grassroots struggles. Anyone interested in comprehending the highly convoluted situation in Syria must read this extremely sophisticated book." (Dr. Yasser Munif, co-founder of the Global Campaign of Solidarity with the Syrian Revolution)

Review
"Immensely well suited to undergraduate readership in Britain."
Sociological Review

"Hopper provides an accessible and informed introduction to cultural globalization and the critical debates surrounding it."
European Journal of Communication

"Hopper’s book should be required reading for anyone wishing to see globalization’s “big picture”. While many books have been written about globalization, almost all of them give culture short shrift and focus on more easily quantifiable matters such as economics and demographics. Understanding Cultural Globalization fills a most important gap in the literature on globalization. It will provide readers with a sophisticated and nuanced view of the complex phenomena that underlie globalization."
Steve Jones, University of Illinois

"Paul Hopper proposes a differentiating and interdisciplinary approach to understanding cultural globalization. This book is an accessible, informative, clear and student-friendly introduction to the breadth of literature and a range of different debates and topics in cultural globalization studies."
Luke Martell, University of Sussex

"Paul Hopper’s book is to be welcomed. It offers students a valuable, balanced introduction and a clear pathway through the often complexly overlapping arguments and perspectives covered by the idea of cultural globalization."
John Tomlinson, Nottingham Trent University

what is culture - time will tell
By Z.Hanzlik
To read or write a book about culture is self-obliging wandering supermarket in serch of a Marmelade with taste of past , and they have stocked only overpriced chocolate spread. To understand cultural globalization ...- have anyone some culture of her/his own left? I find it fascinating and retarding trend when messenger after achieving its delivery point deliver wrong message and you should pay. Perhaps it is current state of digitally remasterd - accelerated cultural global wish to be it so. Was any time before human intercourse based on so many horizontal preconceptions and shortcuts. When see actors or participants of live cultural events - have you not noticed that they miss reality of time and space. But as book say ,costumes or uniformity is part of our understanding or misunderstanding.

Not For Beginners or Dabblers
By Phil Reda
This is a book full of professional close-up magic from a full time working Pro. The book goes beyond tricks and gets into the how and why - it is book designed for the intermediate and above skill level - there are a few tricks that require little technical skill but require some performance skill. The following couple of questions will gauge the required skill level and help you decide if this book is appropriate ( the reason is this book should not fall into the wrong hands or frustrate the reader.)

1. What is a double lift?
2. What is finger palm position?
3. What is a Hindu Shuffle?
4. Si Stebbins System?

These are basic concepts and if you have never heard of them then may I suggest the following two books(Both available on Amazon):

Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic

or

Magic: The Complete Course (Book & DVD)

Both books should be in all Magicians Libraries anyway and they will give you the foundation you will need to advance to the next level and they have excellent magic.

The effect in this book range from standard Card and Coin to odd objects like a soda straw. The instructions are clear and well written. I especially like the appendix were he briefly covers required slights ( though you still need to have a basic library for more detailed explanations.)

This book was originally published and sold for around $45 - this is a steal! Dover has done it again with quality and affordability. Dover has also published other great magic books checkout:
The Royal Road to Card Magic
Expert Card Technique: Close-Up Table Magic
Modern Coin Magic: 116 Coin Sleights and 236 Coin Tricks

As a note I have been doing close-up magic for over 30 years and have an extensive library This Dover publication is right up there with books costing 3 times the price. It is hard to pick my favorite effects from the book but I really like (just to name a few:)
1. Gunslinger
2. Base Ball production from card box a rework of John Bannon effect
3. The FBI Trick - will have to find my thumb cuffs - very good routine that take a stage classic and brought it to a walk around performance piece.

What I really like is that most of the effects reset or have a quick reset time.

Close Up Magic Secrets
By Amazon Customer
Here's a secret....when this material was first released to magicians, the book sold for $40 and magicians now actively bid over $100 for Diamond Jim's book on auction sites, and they consider that a bargain! Close Up Magic Secrets contains some of Diamond Jim's best material, performed professionally for many years, and you can get it for less than $11. Are you nuts? Get it! It is rock solid and top notch. You couldn't find a better bargain anywhere. Yes, the effects take a bit of work and practice, but once mastered you have some powerful magic in your hands that will entertain and amaze people. This isn't a bunch of cheap junk from the back of some comic book. This is proven magic developed by one of the world's top close up workers. It belongs in the personal library of every close up magician, amateur or professional.

Diamond Jim IS magic!
By Zorbear
The tricks in this book are obviously selected for their "WOW" factor for the audience. But I find that their effect amazes magicians as well - often including the performer! Diamond Jim goes to great lengths to break down each trick and explain it in easy-to-understand detail. If you're going to perform close-up magic, then "Pockets Full of Miracles" is one book you should own. Learn these tricks and everyone will think you are, indeed, a miracle-worker.

BTW: I'm a retired magician and I've known Diamond Jim professionally for his entire career. I have to say that not only is his magic a joy to watch, but his books (and esp. "Pockets Full of Miracles") take a lot of the sting out of trying to learn close-up magic.

Some have said that magic is hard (and it can be), but Diamond Jim makes it easier than any other magic writer I've read - and that includes me. Good magic requires both good material and lots of practice. You can't go wrong with any Diamond Jim product. Trust me - I'm a magician!

The African Queen, by C. S. Forester

First published in 1935, C.S. Forester's classic romantic adventure is a tale of opposites attracted. Allnut and Rose, a disreputable Cockney and an English spinster missionary, wend their way down a river in Central Africa in a rickety, asthmatic steam launch, and are gradually joined together in a mission of retaliation against the Germans. Fighting time, heat, malaria and bullets, the two have a dramatic rapprochement before the explosive ending of the book. This tale of unlikely love is thrilling and funny and ultimately satisfying.

C. S. Forester Knows How to Tell Stories
By gray
Some authors have the gift of putting words together in a way that entertains and enthralls the reader. C. S. Forester is one of the best. When Forester tells a story, the reader feels personally involved. We feel like we know the characters in a personal, intense way. If you have read Forester's Hornblower novels, you have read Forester at his best. The African Queen was made into a memorable movie starring Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. The book is more intense, darker, and far less triumphant than the movie. If you thrill to the successes of Horatio Hornblower in Forester's navel novels, you might find African Queen a little depressing at times. If you like depressing novels (and apparently many readers do) you might give this book five stars. The story is set during World War I and involves the attempt by a missionary lady and an alcoholic English boatman to travel down a river in Africa to do battle with the Germans. The interaction between the characters and the river creates a riveting story. Like Hemingway, "I recommend Forester..."

A good movie. A very ,very good book.
By Yankee Dame
There is really not much to say except that the Hollywood movie is not really very much like the book. (Why does this not suprise me?) The story and the characters are much more human, possibly because they are not "Katharine H. and Boogie" and this is not Hollywood. The thundering falls, the hunger, the heat, the gloomy swamps, the smother lake of water lillies, the endless toil and hours...and then, in the end, to see their mission fail. As heart breaking and riviting as any book ever writen.

The devil is in the detail
By Peter Bowes
C S Forester knew his business. He knew a plausible method of turning an old river steamer into a torpedo, he knew the hellish consequences of losing a prop blade, of mooring in a mangrove swamp, of finding still water in a rapid.. And as he has proven so many times in the Hornblower novels, he knows the way of knaves and gentleman... This is a book for any age.

For centuries, man has sought to reach out to God’s servants and messengers in a real-world, palpable way that leaves no room for spiritual doubt. In the time of Queen Elizabeth I in England, world famous occultist Dr. John Dee and his helper, Edward Kelley, developed a system for contacting angels that came to be called “Enochian Magick.” Dee’s system has survived the centuries and been passed down to us.

“ANGEL SPELLS – THE ENOCHIAN OCCULT WORKBOOK OF CHARMS, SEALS, TALISMANS AND CIPHERS” offers the reader a history lesson on Dee’s method for contacting angels, including its origins in the Jewish and Christian mystical traditions. The book includes an exclusive interview with author Aaron Leitch, who still practices Dee’s methods over 400 years later.

For those not quite ready to dive into the more complex aspects of Enochian Angel magick, simpler – but just as effective – methods are taught here by psychic Maria D’Andrea, who provides step-by-step instructions to petition specific angels for help with any problem, large or small. A dozen talismans created my Ms D' Andrea are provided each corresponding with a different Arch Angel.

And as a bonus supplement, we have included Bishop Allen Greenfield’s classic work, “SECRET CIPHER OF THE UFONAUTS,” to assist in contacting angelic aliens in their own language and to aid in decoding what they have spoken to us!

This fascinating work includes all the talismans and symbols and ciphers you need to set up your own angel alter so that you may proceed with contacting the celestial kingdom in an organized effort.

At Last, an Intelligent Book on Spells and Magick
By Zontar
This book is no joke! It is full of excellent information that cannot be found anywhere else. You can tell the authors spent a lot of time searching through ancient documents to make the material available to the modern reader. As well, Maria D' Andrea does a great job of providing angel spells that are more palatable to a 21st century audience. While Allen Greenfield shows the secret connection behind the UFO mystery and the magickal process. It makes you wonder if yesterday's angels are today's UFO occupants. In a time when the bookshelves are full of stupid trash like magic spells for teens, and The Twilight Guide to Getting Your Own Vampire Lover, I highly recommend this book for the fact that it doesn't speak down to its readers.

Must buy!
By Jesus Tovar
It's an amazing book! It makes the contacting of angels practical! It's actually kinda mind-blowing as well...I had to a break from reading it because of how powerful the stuff is. Warning: Do not attempt to use Enochian Keys or any other Angel ritual with an ego or disrecptful attitude. Angels are beings higher then us and they won't respect you if you disrespect them. You will regret it if you use it improperly. Angels are here to help us. Have a good heart and things will be fine. :)

Very good. Parts were beyond my comprehision or me putting in the necessary effort to understand. Don't bore the angels with our petty problems. However they love to help! Thought provoking!

Something to pass the time.
By Marilyn Sullivan
I gave this book four stars because the story was engaging and I got caught up in the characters of the dogs and fox in spite of myself. There were no surprises here. I will say that Mr. Adams has a wonderful imagination and conveys what he thinks these animals might experience. The book was a slow-go in parts, and the illustrations and maps added very little to the book. The plot was bad guys vs good guys and in that way there was no suspense. I have to admit, I cried at the end, which is out of character for me. Then I did some research about the writing of the book and found that the author actually wanted to have the book end differently. So in essence he caved in to outside pressures. Regardless, I'm glad I read it, though it was nowhere near as good as Watership Down.

So sad but so beautiful.

Plague dogs highlights scientific animal testing from the point of view of animals.

It also brings up important lessons on loyalty, determination and love. This book is a must for young readers.
