Amazon.com Review
Fiber-optic networking, on both small and large scales, has lots of advantages over traditional wire and wireless networks. First, optical signals can travel enormous distances without the need for amplification. Second, optical networks provide enormous bandwidth that is hundreds of times larger than that of many other media. In Optical Networks, authors Ramaswami and Sivarajan explore the scientific concepts and engineering considerations behind light-based networks.

The authors begin with the physical phenomena that make optical networks possible. They cover characteristics of light in depth, with an eye toward optimizing light's ability to carry signals long distances. They progress to detailing the hardware that makes networks possible, including multiplexers, filters, amplifiers, transmitters, detectors, and switches. Generally, discussion is theoretical, rather than oriented toward any particular make and model of gear. The authors then cover various means of encoding information into light waves, paying attention to topics such as wavelength routing, network topology, and management.

Readers who are planning to put together an optical network may find that the book's case studies are the most interesting part of the text. The authors give examples of real-world networks that different companies have built, such as AT&T's Africa ONE and Alcatel's WDM Ring. They then analyze each system, picking out the strong and weak points of each.

This is an academic book, full of equations, graphs, and schematics. Don't expect to get a lot out of this book if you're wiring up your office's local area network (LAN). Optical Networks is appropriate if you work on big, high-capacity networks or if you want a glimpse of one possible future Internet infrastructure. --David Wall

Best book on Optical Networks
By A Customer
Over the past year, I've been involved in a project which required me to learn a lot more about optical networks. In addition to reading the papers from ANSI T1X1 and the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF), I purchased several books on the subject, including Siller and Shafi's "SONET/SDH," Goralski's "SONET" and Laches' "Fiber Optic Communications". Ramaswami and Sivarajan's book "Optical Networks" is definitely the best of the group. "SONET/SDH" gives a good overview, but you need to already know something about SONET in order to understand it. Goralski's "SONET" is too basic, while "Fiber Optic Communications" is too theoretical. "Optical Networks" is "just right" (to quote a famous young lady's comments about a baby bear's porridge). Whenever I need to know something about optical networks, this is the book I turn to. The only problem is that the field of optical networks is moving quite fast right now and this book provides a snapshot of the 1997-1998 timeframe. I wish the authors would put up a web site discussing some of the recent activity in the field, but I suppose it's a bit much to ask them to devote their lives to the book. All in all, if you want an excellent introduction to optical networks, this is the book for you.

It needs UPDATE!
By A Customer
This was a very nice book, however, written in 1997. In a rapid progressive space like optical network, this book quickly fells into legacy and can only be rendered as college entry-level textbook in said subject. Many new initiatives and tests have been launches and reviewed. Even Rajiv's new exciting micro-mirror technology (of Xeros) is not covered, not mentioning tunable laser application in mesh architecture. It was a five-star book until mid-1999. In spring 2000, I can only give a honost three-star rating as an encouragement for the author to update his book. It is overdue!

AN INVALUABLE BOOK ON OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS.
By Venugopal K. R.
An excellent and comprehensive book on Optical Networks for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Electrical and Computer Science/Engineering.The book consists of two parts. The first part consisting of six chapters, dwells upon technological developments in optical components and transmission systems. The first chapter throws light on the state-of-the-art optical communication technology. The second chapter describes the features of optical fiber and its superiority over other communication media such as copper wire. The third chapter is an overview of the optical components viz., transmitters, receivers, switches, amplifiers etc., while the fourth chapter explains the process of Modulation and Demodulation in converting electrical signals to optical signals and vice-versa. The fifth chapter deals with the design of the physical layer. The concepts explained in all these chapters are clear and lucid. This part is particularly useful for students of Electrical Engineering.
The second part of this book deals with optical network architecture and algorithms. The sixth chapter emphasizes the necessity of optical fiber and includes the architecture of SONET/SDH. The seventh chapter illustrates the Broadcast and Select Wavelength Division Multiplexing Networks widely used in LANs and WANs, while the next chapter covers the architecture and algorithms employed in Wavelength Routed Networks for WANs. Chapter nine introduces the notion of Virtual topology design which is useful in integrating IP and ATM networks over the Optical layer. Control and management, that is, configuration, equipment, fault, failure, safety, management form the crux of the tenth chapter. Chapter eleven describes the on going research activities of various testbeds on Wavelength Routed Networks. Chapter twelve provides optical network solutions for Fiber-to-the-home access network applications. The thirteenth chapter emphasizes the issues faced by the network operators in upgrading the existing networks. The last chapter explores Packet Switched Optical Networks. This portion of the book is useful for students of Computer Science and Engineering.
The authors have covered a wide range of topics, from physics of the optical fiber to the networking aspects. The book is very simple to read, easy to absorb, and exceptionally exciting in the world of optical networks. The authors have taken lot of care to design the book for an academic curriculum without sacrificing the depth of the topics and it is a very useful book for research students.
The book is an admirable piece of work, eminently scientific in concept, and elegant in style. It is an exceedingly stimulating book with theoretical rigor and practical in approach which is too often lacking in works on optical communication. The results are profound and enlightening. There is a smooth flow of the concepts from the beginning to the end. The exercises in the chapter enables the student to check his understanding of the concepts. A number of useful references for further reading are included at the end of the chapters. It is indeed a competent work signaling a definitive contribution to optical communication. No future student of the fortunes of optical communications can afford to overlook it. This book deserves to be read and reread by each and every student of optical communications.

Good for entertaining hobbyists, but more detailed info would be better.
By Toni Gee
Overall I give the collection 4 stars for all that it does well - even though it is not entirely what I had hoped it would be. This is a good collection for entertaining people interested in cannabis, but it is not as informational as I had hoped it would be.

I was hoping for something that would share more useful information about different strains of cannabis: growing characteristics, preferred growing mediums and environments, indoor-outdoor height, potency, nutrient preferences, etc. I keep hoping somebody will produce something like a world wide seed catalog, but written by unbiased connoisseurs and growers who are personally experienced with growing the various strains and with their medical properties and effects.

On the positive side: The photography was great and there were some really interesting articles in the books as well. Also, the price is fantastic for all that you are getting, and the presentation value is very good (including the nice slip case).

One major drawback for me however was how repetitively the author constantly preaches about how "outdoor organically grown" cannabis is so universally superior to every other possible growing alternative. It's fine that he believes that so adamantly, but I didn't feel I needed to hear those same beliefs repeatedly hammered home on virtually every single page of the book(s) and I was really tired of hearing about it only halfway through the first book.

Not quite what I thought
By A Customer
While the Big Book of Buds is more or less a seed catalog, the Cannabible is instead a catalog of buds available if you happen to have connisseur connections around the world, plus some of the typical Amsterdam coffeehouse strains. A fair number of these strains are unavailable as seed or are extinct, thus valuable as a curiousity or for history's sake, but I guess it left me wanting information about strains which you could actually grow out. However, the coverage of the 'dam product is useful.
He is a firm advocate of organic grown and carefully cured buds and I respect his lack of tolerance for quick cured hydro. Occasionally I think his focus on taste gets in the way of his description of the effects.
Praise is due for his superb history of cannabis and its spread through the modern world in addition to a very well documented history of modern cannabis breeding and seedbanks over the past 25 years or so. His views on what's happening to the gene pool and the need to return to more sativa based genetics were interesting and informative.
Photography was also excellent, with some amazing microphotography of trichomes, although a million pictures of bud doesn't really do much for me. I would personally like to see more pictures of what the full grown plants actually look like as well as more detailed descriptions of what the experience of each is like. The bulk of the book is pictures of mostly dried buds with sparse descriptions.
On a couple of occasions he lapses into some stuff that is a bit new-agey for me, but overall I believe he has kept a fairly level head.

Mini everything
By Sfbkny
I thought I was ordering the full size collection but should have noticed the price was too good too be true. The pictures are smaller and they're too small to be adequate coffee table books. The pictures are still there but not large enough to appreciate the beauty of some of these buds. The books are great for the Cannibus enthusiast but the bigger the better.

A Courgeous Truth Teller and a Man of Integrity
By Stephen Courts
This book was suggested by someone whom I have gotten to know doing book reviews. I am NOT "anti-semitic", but will probably be called one for supporting The Other Side Of Deception. In the vein of Susan Lindauer's Extreme Prejudice and Sibel Edmonds Classified Woman, and Abraham Bolden's The Echo From Dealey Plaza, this book has a message the extreme right wings of both the American and Israeli governments are complicit in ensuring that peace never comes to the Middle East. Victor Ostrovsky is a peace seeking patriot who was willing to risk his life and his family's to expose the devious policies of the Mossad. He took enormous risks to assist the forces trying to expose the Mossad for what they really are; war seeking and traitorous power seeking lunatics. The Mossad has perfected the use of every illegitimate means possible to label those who disagree with their methods as "anti-semitic". Eisenhower, JFK and George H. W. Bush were the few who stood up to the right wing Likud and war mongers like Netanyahu who talk out of both sides of their mouths, talking peace and statehood for the Palestinians all the while planning or using every devious weapon in their arsenal, including atomic, bacteriological and chemical weapons. Not to mention counterfeit money to destabilize countries, assassination and arming the extreme militants on the other team.

My only fault is that Victor refuses to believe that George H.W. Bush had anything to do with Iran Contra. That is simply not true. One only has to read Compromised, Clinton, Bush and The CIA by Terry Reed to discover the truth. In addition, why would Bush pardon everyone involved in the escapade on Christmas Eve 1992 if he had nothing to hide?

I highly recommend this book and urge the readers and thinkers to do some critical thinking about why the world, particularly the Middle East has been in some form of "conflict" since World War Two. Much like our own CFR and CIA, it is to their advantage to constantly encourage conflict to sell more arms and forment more revolution. As President Kennedy famously said, "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible, will make violent revolution inevitable". I side with patriots like Victor who believe in peace and a two state solution for the Israelis and Palestinians.

Several reviewers have already documented the atrocities, such as the testing of bacteriological weapons on the black South Africans and the Palestinians and quite a few other illegal and inhumane acts by the Mossad, so I won't be redundant.

Critical Reading for those who care about the US in 2004
By A Customer
For a thinking person, the revelations in this book should spawn probing questions about the Mossad's part in geopolitics from pre-9-11 to 2004. Ostrovsky outlines how the Mossad, unlike any other secret intelligence service in the world, uses the vast Diaspora as "assets" to do their bidding. It is organized so that the Diaspora (over 50,000 strong) become temporary Mossad agents on an as-needed basis.
This structure accomplishes two things:
(1) By playing on the 'help the homeland' aspect of requesting help for Israel from the Diaspora through whatever the 'asset's' position or job skill can produce, it naturally compartmentalizes the significance of a job, and reduces costs. The Mossad has only 1200 agents worldwide, but calls on the considerable PR skills of the B'nai B'rith, JDL, and ADL to advance its aims on an as-needed basis. Ostrovsky shows in event after event how this is by design.
(2) The Mossad can get away with meddling in the politics of foreign countries by labeling as "anti-semitic" any objection to its methods; or similarly, by labeling as "anti-semitic" any objections if its gets caught. Again, Ostrovsky shows in example after example how this is by design.
The recent 2004 scandal in New Zealand is a case in point. This involved Mossad agents caught stealing New Zealand passports from paraplegics. Or the more disturbing US-based AP reports from Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida in the last five weeks in which Israeli agents were caught near nuclear sub and fuel stations, or trying to enter federal installations. The only reporter willing to follow up these stories is Daniel Hopsicker, a respected journalist, of online MadCowProd News. When you realize that these agents caused an entire Navy Sub station with nuclear missles to close down (May 20, 2004) because sniffing dogs discovered bomb material in their moving trucks, it makes Ostrovsky's detailed warning about what the Mossad is doing in the US all the more alarming.
I think the information I found the most distressing was how the Mossad uses US national print and broadcast media and reporters as assets. This a propaganda machine that at this time can only lead to more US sons and daughters coming home from Iraq in body bags. I say this because Ostrovsky is adamant in this book, published in 1993 or 1994, that it has been the Mossad's express policy for years to get the US into war with Iraq.

Must have for Nirvana/Kurt Cobain Fans
By C. Parsons
Nirvana fans will love this (although, be aware; most of the photos are of Kurt Cobain). The photography is excellent and candid; displayed in a "coffee-table" book style- large pictures and lots of them. Lots of black & white photos as well as color. The photos of Kurt with Frances as an infant will tug at your heart.

Absolutely beautiful book.

If you love Nirvana, you've got yourself a book.
By Jordyn
Not being a big fan of Nirvana, I wasn't sure what to get my sister for her birthday. My sister is a huge fan, you see, and she loves books with pictures. After searching far and wide for a book with Nirvana and pictures of Nirvana, I discovered this one.
If you are looking to buy a book with photos from the days of Nirvana, then this is the one for you. Not only does over half the book contain large pictures, they are all (most, there are a few in black and white) in color, and they are rare photos that don't appear as often as most others do.
This book is a great buy for the Nirvana fan. If you love Nirvana, you've got yourself a book.

Nirvana captured in the Raw.
By J. Shannon
This book is by far the nicest Nirvana book I own. It's a beautiful, thick paperback, with fantastic rare photographs. For a long time, the only Nirvana books around were information heavy, and focused a lot on Kurt's death. This book captures exactly what they were, A great band. Pure punk rock, pure soul, pure energy. It's a wonderful memory of a great band. You'd be mad not to buy this book.

Kid-Friendly Veggies and Fruits: 10 Tips on Making Healthy Foods More Fun for Children

Encourage children to eat vegetables and fruits by making it fun. Provide healthy ingredients and let kids help with preparation, based on their age and skills. Kids may try foods they avoided in the past if the help make them.

  • Smoothie Creations: Blend far-free or low-fat yogurt or milk with fruit pieces and crushed ice. Use fresh, frozen, canned, and even overripe fruits. Try bananas, berries, peaches, and/or pineapples. If you freeze the fruit first, you can even skip the ice.
  • Delicious Dippers: Kids love to dip their foods. Whip up a quick dip for veggies with yogurt and seasonings such as herbs or garlic. Serve with raw vegetables like broccoli, carrots, or cauliflower. Fruit chunks go great with a yogurt and cinnamon or vanilla dip.
  • Caterpillar Kabobs: Assemble chunks of melon, apple, orange, and pear on skewers for a fruity kabob. For a raw veggie version, use vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, squash, sweet peppers, or tomatoes.
  • Personalized Pizzas: Set up a pizza-making station in the kitchen. Use whole-wheat English muffins, bagels, or pita bread as the crust. Have tomato sauce, low-fat cheese, and cut up vegetables or fruits for toppings. Let kids choose their own favorites, then pop the pizzas into the over to warm.
  • Fruity Peanut Butterfly: Start with carrot sticks or celery for the body. Attach wings made of thinly sliced apples with peanut butter and decorate with halved grapes or dried fruit.
  • Frosty Fruits: Frozen treats are bound to be popular in the warm months. Just put fresh fruits such as melon chunks in the freezer (rinse first). Make "popsicles" by inserting sticks into peeled bananas and freezing.
  • Bugs on a Log: Use celery, cucumber, or carrot sticks as the log and add peanut butter. Top with dried fruit such as raisins, or cherries, depending on what bugs you want.
  • Homemade Trail Mix: Skip the pre-made trail mix and make your own. Use your favorite nuts and dried fruits, such as unsalted peanuts, cashews, walnuts, or sunflower seeds mixed with dried apples, pineapple, cherries, apricots, or raisins. Add whole-grain cereals to the mix, too.
  • Potato Person: Decorate half a baked potato. Use sliced cherry tomatoes, peas, and low-fat cheese on the potato to make a funny face.
  • Put Kids In Charge: Ask your child to name new veggie or fruit creations. Let them arrange raw veggies or fruits into a fun shape or design.

    A "must - have" book
    By Janett Hemans
The first time I saw this book on the shelf of a prominent university library here in Jamaica, I just had to un-shelf it: it was eye - catching. I began reading and was impressed with the writer's style / approach in delivering information. It is so structured that it may be used at all levels.
I will be making recommendations to my supervisor for this book, along with the study guide, to be given consideration for our reference collection.

    By Diann A. Holland
Had to get this book for a nutrition class, LOVED the class it was VERY INTERESTING! The book was a great addition to the class. However, I felt that there were parts in the book that dragged. It went into far more detail in parts. However I can see that if someone was going for a nutrition degree that more in depth would be what they were going for.

funded by and partnered with companies like Monsanto, Dupont
    By Amazon Customer
I have a problem with an author or "expert" on nutrition claiming that Registered Dietitians are the most complete and reliable source for science and fact based information. Is it a coincidence that Karen Drummond is an R.D. herself? Also, she lectures about getting "real" nutritional and scientific information from reliable and transparent websites that clearly identify their sponsors yet quotes from websites sponsored by, funded by and partnered with companies like Monsanto, Dupont, Kelloggs, etc.(except you wouldn't know that unless you do some digging). Is it a coincidence that this book is ridiculously expensive and co-authored by a former student from the Culinary Institute of America and happens to be the required textbook for the food science classes in the school? I'm so disappointed in the stale, regurgitated information in this book. I'd have an easier time just reading from the U.S.D.A food pyramid guidelines. There is nothing new or interesting in this book AT ALL. If you have any interest in nutrition, my guess is that you already know way more than what is discussed in this elementary school level waste of paper and money.

The Dreaming Void (Commonwealth: The Void Trilogy), by Peter F. Hamilton

Reviewers exhaust superlatives when it comes to the science fiction of Peter F. Hamilton. His complex and engaging novels, which span thousands of years–and light-years–are as intellectually stimulating as they are emotionally fulfilling. Now, with The Dreaming Void, the first volume in a trilogy set in the same far-future as his acclaimed Commonwealth saga, Hamilton has created another ambitious and gripping space epic.

The year is 3589, fifteen hundred years after Commonwealth forces barely staved off human extinction in a war against the alien Prime. Now an even greater danger has surfaced: a threat to the existence of the universe itself.

At the very heart of the galaxy is the Void, a self-contained microuniverse that cannot be breached, cannot be destroyed, and cannot be stopped as it steadily expands in all directions, consuming everything in its path: planets, stars, civilizations. The Void has existed for untold millions of years. Even the oldest and most technologically advanced of the galaxy’s sentient races, the Raiel, do not know its origin, its makers, or its purpose.

But then Inigo, an astrophysicist studying the Void, begins dreaming of human beings who live within it. Inigo’s dreams reveal a world in which thoughts become actions and dreams become reality. Inside the Void, Inigo sees paradise. Thanks to the gaiafield, a neural entanglement wired into most humans, Inigo’s dreams are shared by hundreds of millions–and a religion, the Living Dream, is born, with Inigo as its prophet. But then he vanishes.

Suddenly there is a new wave of dreams. Dreams broadcast by an unknown Second Dreamer serve as the inspiration for a massive Pilgrimage into the Void. But there is a chance that by attempting to enter the Void, the pilgrims will trigger a catastrophic expansion, an accelerated devourment phase that will swallow up thousands of worlds.

And thus begins a desperate race to find Inigo and the mysterious Second Dreamer. Some seek to prevent the Pilgrimage; others to speed its progress–while within the Void, a supreme entity has turned its gaze, for the first time, outward. . . .

    From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. The first of a trilogy, the far-future plot of this audiobook concerns various factions battling to help or prevent a religious movement from undertaking a pilgrimage to a world hidden within a mysterious void, a journey with the potential to significantly advance the human race—or destroy the galaxy. Listeners to Hamilton's complex SF epic must devote a fairly significant amount of time, patience and attention to the task. A single chapter lasts for hours; within each chapter, the perspective and story line shift multiple times, with no audibly perceptible break. It's comparable to being lost in a strange, dark and, above all, vast room, and takes a while to adjust. Gradually, though, plot lines begin to take shape, and the compelling story and relentless pace drives listeners forward through a highly enjoyable trip. John Lee enunciates a daunting amount of exposition with precision and provides his share of creditable accents and voice pitches. A Del Rey hardcover (Reviews, Feb. 4). (July)

    Potentially Hamilton's best series yet
    By John Smith
The dust jacket proclaims, "The year is 3589, fifteen hundred years after Commonwealth forces barely staved off human extinction in a war against the alien Prime". The arithmetic is flawed ("Judas Unchained" was circa 2380, so about 1200 years have elapsed), but Hamilton's story-telling, character development, and world-building are virtually flawless.

After a prologue introducing Inigo and the mysterious Void, which is being studied by the ancient Raiel race, Commonwealth humans, and a number of alien races at Centurion Station near the galactic center, the story alternates between the main time sequence following various Commonwealth characters, and chapters detailing Inigo's past "dreams" of apparently medieval humans. As the story unfolds, it is soon revealed that Inigo's "dreams", which have been recorded and shared with millions of other humans through the gaiafield (a kind of telepathic network enhancement that many have chosen for themselves), are believed to originate from the Void and to chronicle actual life inside the Void. Millions of humans believe life inside the Void to be idyllic -- a religion, the Living Dream, grows around this belief, culminating in a plan for a mass Pilgrimage into the Void.

In conflict with the Living Dreamers are the Raiel, at least one faction of the human-created non-physical intelligence ANA, and an alien race called the Ocisen Empire. The Raiel have been struggling against the Void for a million years, having seen the Void expand and devour countless inhabited worlds, and they expect that a Pilgrimage could trigger another deadly expansion. The Living Dream Pilgrimage, if not stopped, may cause the destruction of the galaxy. But the Living Dream religion persists, and ANA:Governance, controller of the immensely powerful Navy (a military force which has grown in power since defeating the Prime in "Judas Unchained"), seems inclined to protect the Living Dreamers from outside influence or attack.

A number of characters are introduced, both in Inigo's dream chapters, and in the Commonwealth chapters. Aaron is searching for Inigo (who has disappeared sometime after having his famous dreams), but he does not know why or who sent him, and he seems strangely accepting of the mission script he is following as it is gradually revealed to him. Edeard is an orphan boy from Inigo's dream who is trying to find his place in a world that is both hostile to him and able to be shaped by his telepathic powers. In the Commonwealth where technology can be employed to keep one's body fit and perfect, Troblum is a physicist who is extremely fat, a collector of memorabilia from the Starflyer war, and gifted at creating advanced technology and weapons for whoever is willing to feed his obsessions. Araminta is a young, ambitious first-life woman who is trying to start a property-development business herself after a divorce, but her adventures are just beginning.

Justine, Paula, and Oscar from the Commonwealth Saga also have storylines, and there are appearances by several other characters from the Commonwealth Saga. Commonwealth Saga characters notably absent from "The Dreaming Void" are the alien Silfen, any escaped alien Prime, the SI (sentient intelligence), the Bose motile, and Nigel and Ozzie (although Ozzie has apparently become a common swear word).

There is a timeline at the end of the book that provides a number of helpful historical references to fill in some of the events between the end of the Commonwealth Saga and the events in "The Dreaming Void". For example, "2833--Completion of ANA first stage on Earth; Grand Family members begin memory download into ANA rather than to SI....3001--Ozzie produces uniform neural entanglement effect known as the gaiafield." There are no significant spoilers in the timeline, and since Hamilton does not fill in all the details in the narrative, it may be helpful to read the timeline before beginning the novel.

While there are at least 9 viewpoints running simultaneously in "The Dreaming Void", I did not find myself bored by any of them. In contrast, I frequently skipped over various uninteresting viewpoints in Hamilton's Nightsdawn trilogy. Hamilton has done an excellent job of choosing the viewpoint characters in "The Dreaming Void", balancing the action between them, and keeping all of them relevant and interesting. I appreciate that Hamilton has not spent many words summarizing events from the Commonwealth Saga, since that would merely bore readers who are familiar with those events, and probably not help those who have never read those books. Also, since this is not strictly a sequel (1200 years have passed and the most important characters are new), I suspect that it can stand on its own for someone who has not read the previous books. However, as expected in the first book of a trilogy, "The Dreaming Void" does leave quite a few plot lines hanging at the end. If I had not already read the Commonwealth Saga books, I am sure I would feel compelled to read them while waiting for the next Void Trilogy book to be released.

    Fabulous
    By Alexander
First of the trilogy, I've read it before, I own the hardcover and I wanted the audiobook and ebook. Fabulous narration. It is part of the Commonwealth Universe but the trilogy can stand alone. It would be helpful to have read Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained, but it is not absolutely necessary.

    Hamilton KNOWS sci-fi!
    By Armchair Interviews
Peter Hamilton is one of the most ambitious and engaging writers in contemporary science fiction, and The Dreaming Void, the first novel of a trilogy, will please many of his old and new readers.

Told as a dual narrative, The Dreaming Void takes its title from the Void, an inaccessible "microuniverse" that most of the galaxy's races see as a threat to their existence. One strand of the narrative centers upon astrophysicist Inigo's dreams of the humans living within the Void. Since Inigo was serving as an observer, these dreams were broadcasted by the "gaiafield" (a kind of VR Internet) to humanity, and their appealing vision of paradise spawns The Living Dream movement--a new religion whose goal of "living the dream" soon changes to the goal of a Pilgrimage into the Void.

The second strand of the narrative details the galaxy-wide power struggle that unfolds as Ethan, the newly appointed leader of Living Dream, secretly plans to launch a fleet of ships into the Void. Like all of Hamilton's stories, The Dreaming Void features a massive cast of characters: scientists, political leaders, agents of various factions, fathers and daughters, lovers, aliens, and believers. Some, like Aaron, an agent of the faction, do not know whom they are working for; others, like Troblum or Corrie-Lyn, do not know whom they can trust. And then a Second Dreamer surfaces.

Kirkus Reviews describes the book as "a far leaner and more purposeful product: a real spellbinder from a master storyteller," while The Times (London) says, "compulsively readable and abundantly full of ideas." I agree with most of that praise. What distinguishes Hamilton's books is the exploration of how technological progress changes the experience of living. In The Dreaming Void, one example is the "near-postphysical" existence of the people who have uploaded themselves into the Advanced Neural Activity (ANA) system. Yet the balance between exposition/ideas and character development seems slightly less effective than it was in Hamilton's Night's Dawn Trilogy.

That is a small quibble, though. Overall, Hamilton has successfully launched another theologically thought-provoking trilogy and a rich vision of one possible future for humanity.

Armchair Interviews says: Super addition to the bookshelves of fans of sci-fi.

The Creation of Narrative in Tabletop Role-Playing Games, by Jennifer Grouling Cover

Despite the rise of computer gaming, millions of adults still play face to face role playing games, which rely in part on social interaction to create stories. This work explores tabletop role playing game (TRPG) as a genre separate from computer role playing games. The relationship of TRPGs to other games is examined, as well as the interaction among the tabletop module, computer game, and novel versions of Dungeons & Dragons. Given particular attention are the narrative and linguistic structures of the gaming session, and the ways that players and gamemasters work together to construct narratives. The text also explores wider cultural influences that surround tabletop gamers.

but it's not going to help me create better narrative at my table
    By Dan Williamson
Very interesting. Not exactly what I expected, it's a scholarly examination of the way that language is used at the gaming table. Being a fan of linguistics, this was interesting, but it's not going to help me create better narrative at my table.

An Excellent First Step toward a New View on the TRPG
    By Epileptic Tarrasque
By far the most innovative scholastic treatment of the Tabletop Roleplaying Game (TRPG) I've read to date, Creation clearly delineates a new cross-discipline view for future research and debate on narrative and its role in the TRPG. While by necessity Cover reiterates some commonly held truisms in the subject, at no point does this detract from the work, either for a student of rhetoric, or for the lay person.

The only reason this did not receive a fifth star was because of its relatively narrow focus, specifically on Dungeons & Dragons as a flagship TRPG. While it is in effect the quintessential representative of the genre, the effort and tremendous scholarship that went into the production of this book shows to me that the author has abundant potential and talent, and I feel as a personal opinion that the rather tight focus on that one game system in this text does her conclusions and her capabilities something of an injustice.

Whether you are simply an interested person, a player or GM of a TRPG, or a researcher looking seriously into the narrative underpinnings that hold together all of our creatively supported interactions from make-believe games as children to modern computer RPG's and MMORPG's, Cover's insights and excellently researched syntheses prove both engaging to read and provocative in thought. I look forward eagerly to any pursuant texts in the same vein.

I like it, however I do not feel it is ...
    By corey walden
I like it, however I do not feel it is as thoroughly researched as say a contemporary like Peterson. Clearly the angle of the writing is far different, however there were some historical inaccuracies (or omissions). For instance, it is suggested that Arneson was very influenced by Tolkien's work for his Blackmoor game. This may have been (and probably was) the case, however this text fails to acknowledge the enormous influence that Chainmail (by Gygax) had on Arneson's initial Blackmoor concept. Now, Chainmail, was clearly influenced by Tolkien's work!

Having said that, it is easy-to-read, and well-written. It offers a notable contribution to TRPG studies, and I am currently referencing it for a master's thesis.
