The stories are wonderful - humorous, relatable to both children and adults, good lessons without being preachy, and just plain old FUN to share or by oneself.

About the Author
Dr Rosemarie Said Zahlan is a leading authority on the Gulf who has pioneered the development and understanding of the subject. She has written the first account of the Dubai Reform Movement (1970), the first comprehensive history of the United Arab Emirates, The Origins of the United Arab Emirates (1978) and the first history of Qatar, The Creation of Qatar (1969 and 1986), and a number of other works. Her forthcoming book, The Gulf States in the Twentieth Century: Isolation or Centre Stage?, will add considerably to our understanding of the history and politics of the Gulf States throughout the twentieth century.

A dry and uncritical introduction

Zahlan covers the history of the Gulf states with special emphasis on the history of the various monarchical families. Sadly, her attitude is unflinchingly fawning; she seems afraid to say one negative thing about these countries and their economic and political challenges. As well, the writing style is very dry and wooden. Her bias is symbolized by one of the maps showing the UAE as extending westward all the way to Dawhat as Salwa, at the southwest base of Qatar. This reflects absurdly ambitious territorial claims of the UAE at a time when the Saudis have claimed the coast in the vicinity of Khawr Duwayhin, southeast of Qatar. This map is emblematic of the book's flaws. A much better book despite its age (1980) is 'Arabia, the Gulf, & the West' by J.B. Kelly.

The Best Introduction Available

This is the best introduction available on the Gulf states, examining such critical themes as the British imperial legacy and the relationship between state, economy, and social classes. It certainly offers a non-Orientalist treatment and avoids the condescending and often bigoted discourse adopted by such colonial-minded writers as J.B. Kelly. The late Said-Zahlan had a full mastery of the British archives and extensive knowledge of the region. This is reflected in this valuable and concise introductory work.

Easy and neutral

I purchased this book for a graduate course on the Arab gulf states. It was used as an introductory book to read. I enjoined it because it was an easy read. However I was a little bit frustrated because I felt the author was trying too hard to remain objective on certain subjects like colonialism and rentierism, etc. This seemed to cause the author to gloss over certain subjects. Where rather than being objective she could have provided a bit more detail from one angle to help understand the region.

Part history book, part project book about Venetian beads

The Venetian Glass Bead by Kathy Fox is a themed project book. The projects are all built around those gorgeous little bits of glass art from Venice.

This is part reference book and part project book. It is a treat for people who want to know a little more about Venetian glass and wonderful for beginning beaders who want to do trendy boutique style pieces.

The introduction includes some history of Venice with gorgeous color photos, as well as information about how the beads are made using old traditional methods. There is also a short bibliography of suggested books for more in depth information.

Then into the projects, which are well explained. The pieces use the bright colors and finishes of the beads as the focus. For the most part, they are trendy fashion pieces that would make wonderful gifts. Interspersed with the projects are more photographs of Venice with more information about the region.

It starts with patterned which are made using canes. The photographs show the lovely beads well. A lovely rosary is the second project with colorful milleflori beads.

Giovanni is a leather cord necklace that is masculine enough to make a wonderful gift for a young man in your life.

The various projects use techniques like stringing, wire coiling, wire wrapping, wire work, Viking knit, using head pins and making wrap bracelets with leather cording and button clasps.

There is information about the various kinds of Venetian glass included with the projects. You will learn about foiling, millefori, chevrons and many more glass styles.

My favorite projects are the elegantly luminous La Fenice necklace and earrings which use filigrana beads, the Farfalla Viking Knit bracelet with a foiled disk focal, and the very colorful Rezzonico necklace which is made with gemmato beads.

I love the Lucia wrap bracelet as a project that I can do with my daughter.

I love the photographs of Venice. My husband has been there, and it's a place that I've always wanted to visit.

using Venetian beads!! Right now, I cannot get enough of the beautiful

glass beads, their history, and how they are made! Delightful!!

Beautiful Book/Great Ideas

I ordered this book based on excerpts I'd seen and am more than pleased that I did.
The pictures are beautiful and I've adapted two designs to beads that I already have.
I'm looking forward to trying the Viking Knit and other wire designs. The only negative
was too many pages on the history etc of Venetian Glass.

About the Author

Jamie Oliver started cooking at his parents' pub, The Cricketers, in Clavering, Essex, at the age of eight. After leaving school he began a career as a chef that took him to the River Café, where he was famously spotted by a television production company.

His television and publishing career began in 1999 with The Naked Chef series. Since then he has set up Fifteen restaurant in London, changed school dinners in the UK and revolutionized home cooking. His charity, The Jamie Oliver Foundation, seeks to improve people's lives through food.

He writes for publications in the UK and around the world, including his own Jamie Magazine. Jamie lives in London and Essex with his wife Jools and their children.

Fascinating and Appalling. Must Read.

I have read several of Montague Summers' translations of old witchcraft documents, and this was by far the most readable .. as well as the most infuriating. Summers himself (in the 1920s) maintained the rather odd belief that witchcraft was real, still posed a threat to society, and still should be considered a crime. So he has produced here an extremely sympathetic translation of Nicolas Remy's infamous treatise.

This book is not really a witchfinder's manual, as are the _Malleus Maleficarum_ of Kramer and Sprenger, and the _Compendium Maleficarum_ of Guazzo. It is instead sort of a collection of curiosities and stories about the villainous activities of witches, with feeble arguments "proving" that witches are indeed capable of working such evil with the help of their attendant demons. Lots of particulars are cited from cases over which Remy himself had presided as a civil magistrate. Remy was not a churchman, nor an officer of the Inquisition. Typically the Church prosecuted witches for heresy and tried them in the ecclesiastical courts, after which they were turned over to the civil authorities for more tangible crimes (usually murder, committed by magical means.) Sentencing and execution was usually left to the civil court. Remy boasts of having personally condemned more than 200 witches during his career up to the time of writing. His prose style is conversational, almost casual. It is easy to read and is full of sensational and salacious detail which lend it a certain grim fascination.

What is alarming about this book is Remy's unashamed credulity and his obvious unintelligence. He appears to be extremely well-read, but without any critical or analytical faculty whatsoever. With Kramer and Sprenger and Guazzo, I got the impression that these were intelligent men under the grips of a delusion; they arrived at false conclusions because they started with false information, but their reasoning was essentially valid. Remy's conclusions are illogical. His statements defy common sense. He contradicts himself from chapter to chapter, sometimes from page to page. His logic is flawed; his syllogisms tend to combine an A and B which do NOT imply C. Even in Summers' translation it is painfully clear that the author has willfully ignored the obvious in favor of his pre-formed assumptions. What's terrifying is the thought that this buffoon was a JUDGE ... he had the power of life and death over people in the district of Lorraine. He seems quite pleased with himself as he smugly relates stories of how poor old women were frightened and browbeaten and tortured into confessing all kinds of grotesque and imaginary crimes, then delivered to "divine justice" aka burning at the stake. Especially horrifying is Book 3, chapter 6 in which he tells how the Devil urges his disciples to suicide when they are in prison, in order to deny the Church its victory and to secure the witches' souls away from any chance of Redemption. It does not occur to our author that an innocent person, wrongly arrested and tortured, knowing that a person accused of witchcraft has virtually no chance of escape, may choose a quick death rather than face further torture followed by the pain and humiliation of public execution as a witch. Suicide is a desperate act of one who has lost all hope, condemned by the very Church which was supposed to PROTECT them from evil, not perpetrate it upon them. Remy sees his victims' suicides only as conclusive proof of their guilt. So much for Christ's teachings about mercy and compassion.

Remy's _Demonolatry_ is a testament of madness, and a reminder that such madness ruled the "civilized" world only a few centuries ago. Should be required reading for students of history, law, and politics. We should keep history's mistakes before our minds as an example, lest we end up repeating them.

I would also like to go on record as saying: the 2008 Dover edition has one of the ugliest cover designs I have ever seen. Honestly, it's atrocious. But as the saying goes, I can't judge the book by it. This is an ugly but a significant work, well worth having.

Well, talk about preachy. No true information about the subject, only the moral and spiritual pitfalls of those who don't follow the popular christian concepts. While the book's contents were quaint, its information was rather lacking. Nice work of fiction.

Bloodhoof is the re-casting into compulsively spare modern verse of an ancient Eddic poem - but this only begins to hint at its attractions. The conveying of a poet into another language can be talked through in various ways. Stefan Tobler's preface caught hold of me by its enthusiasm, pleasure in the work, and that he cares. In contrast, David Treece's introduction had me bored by the first page. It's the difference - or is here - between the worker on the text and the standing apart academic. About the Author
Gerour Kristny is a phenomenally energetic Icelandic writer, having produced 18 books of fiction and non-fiction prose, as well as children's books and poetry, in the 16 years since the appearance of her first. She has won numerous prizes and awards, from the Icelandic Journalism Award in 2005 to the Icelandic Literature Prize in 2010 for Bloodhoof. She says she chooses each word of her poetry carefully so rarely needs to revise - it certainly shows in this volume.
