Quirky and yet delicious recipes. Some are basic with creative flair while others are more advanced which makes this book great for all types of bakers. And did I mention that it is a hilarious take on Game of Thrones? It had me in stitches!

This book is brilliant! I am a huge fan of the show to begin with and I love smart parodies as well. The size was a bit smaller than I would have liked but the type is still easily readable. The recipes look incredible and I can't wait to try a few with my friends! As an independent filmmaker I plan to record some of these trials so more people will go check this book out! It would make a great gift for that chef in the family! Well done! Now I want more! Dinner Is Coming!

About the Author

Gavin Bowden is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust and the John Radcliffe Hospital, a position held since 2000. His main clinical interests are spine and hip surgery especially the management of degenerative disorders, deformity and tumours of the spine. His major research interest is the design of implants for minimally invasive spinal surgery and basic science interests include the physiology of the growing spine. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Oxford where he is a Fellow of Worcester College. Gavin graduated in Medicine in 1986 from the University of the Witwatersrand and was awarded the Gencor Prize. He then specialised in Orthopaedic Surgery in Cape Town. In 1995 he was awarded the Synthes Prize by the University of Cape Town and the Edelstein Medal (awarded to the outstanding candidate in the Orthopaedic Fellowship Examination) by the College of Surgeons of South Africa. Martin McNally is a full time consultant specialising in limb reconstruction. He leads a specialist team, which runs the only dedicated Bone Infection Unit in the UK. He has a special interest in limb injury, particularly non-union and malunion fractures. Martin's training in trauma and orthopaedics was principally in Northern Ireland. Since 1993, he has developed specialist skills in the treatment of complex injuries, particularly infected fractures and fractures with bone loss. He holds the Martin Medal for Orthopaedic Research, The Sir Walter Mercer Gold Medal from the Intercollegiate Board of the Royal College of Surgeons and the International Society for Fracture Repair Young Investigator Award. Martin has a strong interest and record in teaching and research. He holds the Degree of Doctor of Medicine and is Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery at Oxford University. He is Head of Surgery at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.
Simon Thomas is a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Bristol Royal Children's Hospital and Honorary Consultant at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, positions he has held since late 2007. His main clinical interests are developmental hip dysplasia, limb deformity and sports injuries in children. His major research interest is the use of systemic and intraosseus bisphosphonate for avascular necrosis of the femoral head in children and adolescents. He graduated in Medicine in 1992 from the University of the Cambridge and did clinical training at Barts, qualifying in 1995. He specialised in Orthopaedic Surgery in Oxford (2000-2005). In 2005/6 he undertook 12 months advanced clinical training at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. He has undertaken further fellowship training in Oxford (limb reconstruction) and Perth, Australia (adolescent sports medicine). Alex Gibson was educated in Canterbury, then studied medicine at Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School in London, qualifying MB BS in 1996. After pre-registration jobs, his basic surgical training was on the St. Mary's rotation and orthopaedic specialist training in Oxford. He has also had periods of advanced fellowship training in Spinal surgery in Oxford, Auckland and Brisbane. He was appointed Consultant Spinal Surgeon at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore in 2009.

A book full of many fun holiday things

This book has so many different things for kids to do and make and play to get ready for the Christmas season or on Christmas day. There are the normal mazes, word finds, etc. as well as a match card game to cut out, crafts and recipes. It is a great book for anyone who likes Hello Kitty and a great gift for children. Forgotten story remarkably told

I'm trying to think of a more elegant way to put it, but sometimes you've just gotta say: this is a really good book. "The Fall of Paris" is a remarkable job of storytelling, but it's also a primer of how a talented researcher and writer can synthesize an incredible amount of information from a diverse range of sources and turn it into a densely-packed, but still highly readable, narrative. The author balances broad-view scene-painting with an eye for personality and detail. In short, it's a very impressive work.

In an era when the sanguinary nature of the French Revolution is downplayed ("excesses") or fading from memory, the even more bloody life and death of the Paris Commune seem already long forgotten. For a number of reasons, that's not a good thing. The role of the Franco-Prussian War and the Commune in stoking the fires of 75 years of German-French animosity is only the most obvious example. Less apparent, but just as important, is the example the Commune provided to future "leaders of the people" like Lenin and Stalin, and the way it transformed internal French politics.

This book is an excellent work in its own right, and deserves to be read simply on the merits of what it says about the events themselves. But the value of Horne's series of titles on Franco-German conflicts (of which this is the first of three books), and the influence these events had in their time and continue to have in ours, make an even stronger case for spending time in these pages.

Great narrative of a fascinating period of French history

Horne has written a wonderful narrative of the events preceding and the events of the Siege of Paris in 1870-71. Horne's style is captivating and I found that I could not put the book down. The complex relationships that 'good' historical narratives need to develop are very well constructed by Horne. The attention to minute detail is a strong point of this book.
A throughly researched and emminently readable account. Highly recommended.

Captures the excitement of the period

Horne's style makes the story of the Paris siege and commune every bit as compelling, fast-moving and vivid as the best fiction. You get a real sense of the various characters of the period, the opportunistic, the proud, the inept, the comical and the horrific. Brings this exciting, tumultuous time to life with poetic language and insightful observations. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author.

Very interesting!

Author Temple Grandin was born in 1947 and was autistic before it was a common part of childhood. She brings an unique perspective to the book, being high-functioning herself and having devoted much of her life to studying Autism in its many forms.

What made this book particularly interesting was the neuroscience involved. They have the capability now to scan brains and see how those with autism are wired differently. The amazing thing is that even among those with autism, there is considerable variation among their brains, depending on the individual strengths and weaknesses of each person. For example, Grandin has great difficulty with balance (a common trait in those with autism) and discovered that her cerebellum is 20 % smaller than the in the brain of a neurotypical person.

Also, she discusses possible causes of autism. With my own children, I have always felt that it was genetic. Grandin talks about the DRD4-7R gene which has been linked to anxiety, depression, epilepsy, dyslexia, ADHD, migraines, ocd, and autism. Five of those things run in my family. I know there has been some research suggesting that those who take antidepressants during pregnancy are more likely to have an autistic child (I never have), but what if the connection is the depression itself - that genetic disposition to have something wrong with that gene? It's something to think about.

Later in the book, she emphasizes practical strategies for those with autism, especially for those on the higher end of the spectrum, to make great use of their strengths and to find employment. She disputes the currently popular idea that 10,000 hours practicing something will make you good at it, maintaining that you need at least minimal talent in an area to make that true. For those with autism who are profoundly ungifted in certain areas, all that practice will only lead to frustration, not improvement. Instead, one needs to focus on one's strengths and make the most of them. She wants people, including well-meaning educators and parents, to stop focusing on what is wrong with those with Autism and start focusing on what is right with them. Working on deficits is important, but it isn't everything. See beyond the label.

I found this book extremely interesting. It is definitely geared to help those on the higher end of the spectrum, but if you know and love an Aspie, this book is for you.

This book has me rethinking speech therapy with the bottom up thinking.

Got this book for a friend since he's pretty much the father of an autistic child. Wow was his response and read it in a day. Thanks for making a positive difference in not only their life but also mine. I relate to a lot of things in this book even though I was diagnosed as schizophrenic. I believe these paths cross and this book has sparked an inner fire in me. I am looking forward to getting my brain scanned. I am looking forward to being the first of my kind, learning and then writing a book on it with sensory as the focal point.

This book has great resources and pictures; there is a local doctor who I emailed and there are more books to dive into related to areas of my interests. I recommend this book to post on the schizophrenia sub forums of reddit. I highly recommended this book in a video I produced today titled: Creating catalog bins for your brain: music waves.

After Basil Hallward paints a beautiful, young man's portrait, his subject's frivolous wish that the picture change and he remain the same comes true. Dorian Gray's picture grows aged and corrupt while he continues to appear fresh and innocent. After he kills a young woman, "as surely as if I had cut her little throat with a knife," Dorian Gray is surprised to find no difference in his vision or surroundings. "The roses are not less lovely for all that. The birds sing just as happily in my garden."

As Hallward tries to make sense of his creation, his epigram-happy friend Lord Henry Wotton encourages Dorian in his sensual quest with any number of Wildean paradoxes, including the delightful "When we are happy we are always good, but when we are good we are not always happy." But despite its many languorous pleasures, The Picture of Dorian Gray is an imperfect work. Compared to the two (voyeuristic) older men, Dorian is a bore, and his search for ever new sensations far less fun than the novel's drawing-room discussions. Even more oddly, the moral message of the novel contradicts many of Wilde's supposed aims, not least "no artist has ethical sympathies. An ethical sympathy in an artist is an unpardonable mannerism of style." Nonetheless, the glamour boy gets his just deserts. First published in 1890 in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine and the following year in novel form, The Picture of Dorian Gray categorically changed Victorian Britain and the landscape of literature. An ostentatious, self-confessed aesthete, known for his wit and intellect, Wilde not only had to endure his prose being labeled "poisonous" and "vulgar," but also suffer its use as evidence in the ensuing trial, resulting in his eventual imprisonment for crimes of "gross indecency." Frankel's introduction provides a deft preliminary analysis of the novel itself—exploring etymology and extensive editorial alterations (both accidental and deliberate)—and offers valuable insight into the socio-cultural juxtaposition of aristocratic Victorian society and the London underworld. The original typescript provides the unique opportunity to examine what was considered acceptable in both the US and UK at the time. Intriguing annotations allude to Wilde's influences and enterprising range of reference, incorporating art, poetry, literature, Greek mythology, philosophy, and fashion (certain to inspire further reading; an appendix is provided). Grade 10 Up-"The Whole Story" format provides illustrations and annotations to the classic text. Ross's lively and sophisticated cartoons add interest, and historical information helps readers place the novel in proper context and gives insight into its characters. The problem with this attractive, glossy layout, however, is that the text and the quotes pulled from it are not always on the same page. Further, some illustrations and notations visually cut into the narrative and may distract readers. For example, a drawing appears on the first page along with the passage, "In the centre of the room, clamped to an upright easel, stood the full-length portrait of a young man of extraordinary personal beauty," but that quote does not appear until the second page of the story. Useful as a supplement to the original novel, but not a replacement for it.

Be careful of your wishes.

A dark story, narrated excellantly with changing voices for ths different characters. A painter friend convinces the extremely handsome, Dorian, to pose for him. The painting turns out so well Dorian wants to keep it. He makes a wish that he would always be so handsome and only the painting show his aging and scars of life. His wish is granted and you should follow the outcome of his life.

Not for people with short attention spans

Unfortunately, I was disappointed with this book. I wanted to read this book so I can say I read at least one 'classic' as an adult. While I can at least say that, I found myself bored and my attention span drifting with the extended prose.

Although the book is less than 300 pages, it took me a while to complete it, perhaps due to some archaic vocabulary and extensive prose (which can bore me). That said, the novel was edited well, leaving out unnecessary details in a way that the reader could imagine what happened in the character's life without it being actually being written.

Wilde's writing is truly exquisite, and it's a shame he only wrote the one novel. While reading, I could fully envision the society and the people living in it (to the point of having strong feelings about some!).

Trust me, I really wanted to LOVE this book. And while I can appreciate this novel as a classic, I only liked it. The story was certainly quite creative and risque (for the time), which I enjoyed. I just wish it were a bit more amped-up.

In summary, if you want to read something more fast-paced, I wouldn't recommend this book. If you are a more "refined" reader, I think you have a better chance of truly enjoying it. Also, if you never had to read this in school, it’s worth reading it now.

A classic I am glad to have read

I'm not sure what my expectations were having never read but only watched various versions of Dorian Gray in shows, none of which were accurately faithful to the book. I could see how this would have been considered too risque for audiences at the time it was first published, which makes it an interesting note on how much society has changed. The book was slow moving for about the first 40% of the book and did not even move Dorian's story along. It was almost entirely about Lord Henry Wotton and a bit about Dorian, then when it did change perspectives to Dorian it still took a bit to get to the picture's importance. A good portion of the second half of the book was a litany of the "things" that Dorian would obsess over. To be honest I would skim over these and it was fine because all the detail was not necessary. Not a bad book but not a great read either. Simply a provocative book for an era long gone.

Great overview of Environmental Health

When I took "Environmental and Occupational Health" (EOH) for my master's in public health, this book provided the background for learning this broad course in a matter of 3 months. If I did not have this book while taking the EOH class, I would not have gotten an A. If you want an A in EOH, you should use this book.
