A win for the books!
By Simmy
My nephew talked nonstop about this book over the Thanksgiving holiday. Seeing as how his birth is the week after Thanksgiving I told him it would be my gift to him. As far as I have heard he was over the moon to have gotten this one and the construction book one in the series.

I have never seen my nephew sit still for longer than 3 minutes on a good day but these books cause him to lay down, completely enthralled for hours! A huge happy plus sign for me! I'm all for more books and less electronics most times.

Helpful to beginners
By Pinkie
These books are good for those just starting to play minecraft. I got this one so that I could understand the different mechanics of redstone better. It was helpful but anyone who has played the game for some time will quickly outgrow these books.

The ultimate book for the minecraft obsessed kid.
By May
My kid picks out his bedtime story book, and more often than not it is this one. He has read it cover to cover several times. He tries to replicate the instructions from the book into his game. It's great for the minecraft obsessed kid. Gives him something to do when he's done with screens for the day.

STARRED REVIEW: "Each page in this oversize volume abounds with gorgeous, full-color photographs of toddlers at work. Muffin tins, paint rollers, and kitchen sieves offer hours of exploration, encouraging creativity that far exceeds the possibilities of manufactured toys... this lovely book is rich in visual appeal and thus sure to inspire as designed. For all early child development and parenting collections."—Library Journal

was so glad to see a Loose Parts book written especially for ...
By Teacher of Tots
! was so glad to see a Loose Parts book written especially for tots! I loved the first Loose Parts book and I see everyday how prospective teachers really do not understand how to incorporate loose parts in helping tots safely learn with them. This book has mostly photographs of thousands of ideas. It is more difficult to find things specifically for kids under three and this volume does not disappoint!

Okay for parents
By H. M. Plasek
This is going to be a good resource for parents but, I feel there are way more pictures than actual information. Not that I don't like pictures. I was looking for something with more guidance for parents as far as making and using items.

Home is Where the Shelter is
By Zaabaa
There aren't many things people need to survive -- food, water, and shelter are all that come to mind. So, it stands to reason that it would be a good idea to be able to obtain all if needed. Having some knowledge of harvesting food and purifying water, I wanted to expand my horizons to how to construct shelter from natural materials without the use of tools. This book taught me exactly that (and more!), and I'm quite pleased with it. It goes into good detail on how to build shelters in all types of climates, and also provides a lot of background information as to why shelter is important, and where it should be located. The book contains a lot of pictures for every step of building, and the author is clearly passionate about this craft. Something not as important to me, but still helpful, came as a bonus! The book also includes sections on pre-made shelters, shelter made from bought materials, and even how to mentally prepare yourself for living in a handmade shelter. Nice and comprehensive!

Shelter is Key
By Wendy Valderman
I've read many of these types of books in the survival genre and I always feel like the shelter aspect is glossed over. Creating shelter is quintessential to any successful survival situation and this book gives you the tools you need to be fully prepared in that regard. Not only does this book give you the tools to create great effective shelters in general but keeps the environment of the shelter in mind, and offers shelter from not only the elements but also various debris. The book was easy to follow and an enjoyable read with clear instructions. A great addition to the library of really anyone looking to beef up their knowledge and greatly increase their chances of success in a survival situation

Think of it like a more intense
By Xan. Belzley
This is not only a practical guide to keep on any outdoor adventures where shelter construction may be necessary, but is actually a very engaging read in its own regard. Think of it like a more intense, more practical version of the ever popular "Worst Case Scenarios Survival Handbook." Detailed pictures help you to get a visual idea of the structures at play, as well as the materials you'd need to build them. Frankly, I think the readers who would have the most fun with this book are people with children who have access to a forest space. I can't imagine any child being bored by the real-life excitement of making a home out of the materials nature provides! An excellent way to drag the kids away from the screen for a while. That said, the detailed advice would surely come in handy for someone stuck in a real-life survival situation. All in all, if you might be interested in building shelters outdoors either for fun or in case of emergency, this book is a great option for you.

Review
Praise for Patrick Rothfuss:

"As seamless and lyrical as a song... This breathtakingly epic story is heartrending in its intimacy and masterful in its narrative essence."
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Reminiscent in scope of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series and similar in feel to the narrative tour de force of The Arabian Nights, this masterpiece of storytelling will appeal to lovers of fantasy on a grand scale."
—Library Journal (starred review)

"It is a rare and great pleasure to find a fantasist writing...with true music in the words.... Wherever Pat Rothfuss goes...he'll carry us with him as a good singer carries us through a song."
—Ursula K LeGuin

"The Wise Man's Fear is a beautiful book to read. Masterful prose, a sense of cohesion to the storytelling, a wonderful sense of pacing.... There is beauty to Pat's writing that defies description."
—Brandon Sanderson

"Patrick Rothfuss has real talent, and his tale of Kvothe is deep and intricate and wondrous."
—Terry Brooks

"[Rothfuss is] the great new fantasy writer we've been waiting for, and this is an astonishing book."
—Orson Scott Card

"As with all very best books in our field, it's not the fantasy trappings (as wonderful as they are) that make this novel so good, but what the author has to say about true, common things, about ambition and failure, art, love, and loss."
—Tad Williams

“This is an extremely immersive story set in a flawlessly constructed world and told extremely well.”
—Jo Walton, Tor.com

“It is the best book I have read it years, fantasy or otherwise.... The world is so deep, the stakes are so high, the characters so real, the mysteries so magical, the magic so mysterious, the plot so twisty…every day you haven’t read it is a day in your life that could be better.”
—Hank Green

"This fast-moving, vivid, and unpretentious debut roots its coming-of-age fantasy in convincing mythology."
—Entertainment Weekly

THE FAR BELOW BOTTOM OF THINGS

WHEN AURI WOKE, she knew that she had seven days.

Yes. She was quite sure of it. He would come for a visit on the seventh day.

A long time. Long for waiting. But not so long for everything that needed to be done. Not if she were careful. Not if she wanted to be ready.

Opening her eyes, Auri saw a whisper of dim light. A rare thing, as she was tucked tidily away in Mantle, her privatest of places. It was a white day, then. A deep day. A finding day. She smiled, excitement fizzing in her chest.

There was just enough light to see the pale shape of her arm as her fingers found the dropper bottle on her bedshelf. She unscrewed it and let a single drip fall into Foxen’s dish. After a moment he slowly brightened into a faint gloaming blue.

Moving carefully, Auri pushed back her blanket so it wouldn’t touch the floor. She slipped out of bed, the stone floor warm beneath her feet. Her basin rested on the table near her bed, next to a sliver of her sweetest soap. None of it had changed in the night. That was good.

Auri squeezed another drop directly onto Foxen. She hesitated, then grinned and let a third drop fall. No half measures on a finding day. She gathered up her blanket then, folding and folding it up, carefully tucking it under her chin to keep it from brushing against the floor.

Foxen’s light continued to swell. First the merest flickering: a fleck, a distant star. Then more of him began to iridesce, a firefly’s worth. Still more his brightness grew till he was all-over tremulant with shine. Then he sat proudly in his dish, looking like a blue-green ember slightly larger than a coin.

She smiled at him while he roused himself the rest of the way and he filled all of Mantle with his truest, brightest blue-white light.

Then Auri looked around. She saw her perfect bed. Just her size. Just so. She checked her sitting chair. Her cedar box. Her tiny silver cup.

The fireplace was empty. And above that was the mantelpiece: her yellow leaf, her box of stone, her grey glass jar with sweet dried lavender inside. Nothing was nothing else. Nothing was anything it shouldn’t be.

There were three ways out of Mantle. There was a hallway, and a doorway, and a door. The last of these was not for her.

Auri took the doorway into Port. Foxen was still resting in his dish, so his light was dimmer here, but it was still bright enough to see. Port had not been very busy of late, but even so, Auri checked on everything in turn. In the wine rack rested half a broken plate of porcelain, no thicker than the petal of a flower. Below that was a leather octavo book, a pair of corks, a tiny ball of twine. Off to one side, his fine white teacup waited for him with a patience Auri envied.

On the wall shelf sat a blob of yellow resin in a dish. A black rock. A grey stone. A smooth, flat piece of wood. Apart from all the rest, a tiny bottle stood, its wire bale open like a hungry bird.

On the central table a handful of holly berries rested on a clean white cloth. Auri eyed them for a moment, then took them to the bookshelf, a perch they were more suited to. She looked around the room and nodded to herself. All good.

Back in Mantle, Auri washed her face and hands and feet. She slipped out of her nightshirt and folded it into her cedar box. She stretched happily, lifting up her arms and rolling high onto her toes.

Then she ducked into her favorite dress, the one he’d given her. It was sweet against her skin. Her name was burning like a fire inside her. Today was going to be a busy day.

Auri gathered up Foxen, carrying him cupped in the palm of her hand. She made her way through Port, slipping through a jagged crack in the wall. It was not a wide crack, but Auri was so slight she barely needed turn her shoulders to keep from brushing up against the broken stones. It was nothing like a tight fit.

Van was a tall room with straight, white walls of fitted stone. It was an echo-empty place save for her standing mirror. But today there was one other thing, the gentlest breath of sunlight. It snuck in through the peak of an arched doorway filled with rubble: broken timber, blocks of fallen stone. But there, at the very top, a smudge of light.

Auri stood in front of the mirror and took the bristle brush from where it hung on the mirror’s wooden frame. She brushed the sleep snarl from her hair until it hung about her like a cloud.

She closed her hand over Foxen, and without his blue-green shine the room went dark as dark. Then her eyes stretched wide and she could see nothing but the soft, faint smudge of warm light spilling past the rubble high behind her. Pale golden light caught in her pale golden hair. Auri grinned at herself in the mirror. She looked like the sun.

Lifting her hand, she uncovered Foxen and skipped quickly off into the sprawling maze of Rubric. It was barely a minute’s work to find a copper pipe with the right kind of cloth wrapping. But finding the perfect place, well, that was the trick, wasn’t it? She followed the pipe through the round red-brick tunnels for nearly half a mile, careful not to let it slip away from her among the countless other twining pipes.

Then, with no hint of warning, the pipe kinked hard and dove straight into the curving wall, abandoning her. Rude thing. There were countless other pipes of course, but the tiny tin ones had no wrap at all. The icy ones of burnished steel were far too new. The iron pipes were so eager as to be almost embarrassing, but their wrappings were all cotton, and that was more trouble than she cared to bother with today.

So Auri followed a fat ceramic pipe as it bumbled along. Eventually it burrowed deep into the ground, but where it bent, its linen wrap hung loose and ragged as an urchin’s shirt. Auri smiled and unwound the strip of cloth with gentle fingers, taking great care not to tear it.

Eventually it came away. A perfect thing. A single gauzy piece of greying linen, long as Auri’s arm. It was tired but willing, and after folding it upon itself she turned and pelted madly off through echoing Umbrel, then down and down into The Twelve.

The Twelve was one of the rare changing places of the Underthing. It was wise enough to know itself, and brave enough to be itself, and wild enough to change itself while somehow staying altogether true. It was nearly unique in this regard, and while it was not always safe or kind, Auri could not help but feel a fondness for it.

Today the high arch of space was just as she’d expected, bright and lively. Sunlight speared down through the open gratings far above, striking down into the deep, narrow valley of the changing place. The light filtered past pipes, support beams, and the strong, straight line of an ancient wooden walkway. The distant noise of the street drifted down to the far below bottom of things.

Auri heard the sound of hooves on cobblestones, sharp and round as a cracking knuckle. She heard the distant thunder of a passing wagon and the dim mingle of voices. Threading through it all was the high, angry cry of a babe who clearly wanted tit and wasn’t getting any.

At the bottom of The Yellow Twelve there was a long deep pool with water smooth as glass. The sunlight from above was bright enough that Auri could see all the way down to the second snarl of pipes beneath the surface.

She already had straw here, and three bottles waited on a narrow ledge of stone along one wall. But looking at them, Auri frowned. There was a green one, a brown one, and a clear one. There was a wide wire baling top, a grey twisting lid, and a cork fat as a fist. They were all different shapes and sizes, but none of them were quite right.

Exasperated, Auri threw her hands into the air.

So she ran back to Mantle, her bare feet slapping on the stone. Once there, she eyed the grey glass bottle with the lavender inside. She picked it up, looked it over carefully, then set it back down in its proper place before she scampered out again.

Auri hurried through Port, heading out by way of the slanting doorway this time, rather than the crack in the wall. She twisted up through Withy, Foxen throwing wild shadows on the walls. As she ran, her hair streamed out behind her like a banner.

She took the spiraling stairs through Darkhouse, down and around, down and around. When she finally heard moving water and the tink of glass she knew she’d crossed the threshold into Clinks. Soon Foxen’s light reflected off the roiling pool of black water that swallowed the bottom of the spiraling stairs.

There were two bottles perched in a shallow niche there. One blue and narrow. One green and squat. Auri tilted her head and closed one eye, then reached out to touch the green one with two fingers. She grinned, snatched it up, and ran back up the stairs.

Heading back, she went through Vaults for a change of air. Running down the hall, she sprang over the first deep fissure in the broken floor as lithely as a dancer. The second crack she leapt as lightly as a bird. The third she jumped as wildly as a pretty girl who looked like the sun.

She came into The Yellow Twelve all puffed and panting. As she caught her breath, she tucked Foxen in the green bottle, padded him carefully with straw, and locked down the hasp against the rubber gasket, sealing the lid down tight. She held it up to her face, then grinned and kissed the bottle before setting it carefully by the edge of the pool.

Auri shucked off her favorite dress and hung it on a bright brass pipe. She grinned and shivered a little, nervous fish swimming in her stomach. Then, standing in her altogether, she gathered up her floating hair with both her hands. She brushed it back and bound it, winding and tying it behind her with the strip of old grey linen cloth. When she was done it made a long tail that hung down to the small of her back.

Arms held close against her chest, Auri took two tiny steps to stand beside the pool. She dipped a toe into the water, then her whole foot. She grinned at the feel of it, chill and sweet as peppermint. Then she lowered herself down, both legs dangling in the water. Auri balanced for a moment, holding her nekkid self up with both hands, away from the cold stone lip at the edge of the pool.

But there was no avoiding it. So Auri puckered up and settled herself the rest of the way down. There was nothing peppermint about the cold stone edge. It was a dull, blunt bite against her tender altogether hindmost self.

She turned herself around then, and began to lower herself into the water. She went slowly, tickling around with her feet until she found the little jut of stone. She curled her toes around it, holding herself thigh-deep in the pool. Then she drew a few deep breaths, screwed her eyes shut, and bared her teeth before letting go with her toes and ducking her nethers underneath the surface. She squeaked a little, and the chill made her whole self go gooseprickle.

The worst over, she closed her eyes and dunked her head beneath the water too. Gasping and blinking, she rubbed the water out of her eyes. She had her big all-over shiver then, one arm folded across her breasts. But by the time it was done her grimace had turned to grin.

Without her halo of hair, Auri felt small. Not the smallness that she strove for every day. Not the smallness of a tree among trees. Of a shadow underground. And not just small of body either. She knew there was not much of her. When she thought to look more closely at her standing mirror, the girl she saw was tiny as an urchin begging on the street. The girl she saw was thin as thin. Her cheekbones high and delicate. Her collarbones pressed tight against her skin.

But no. With her hair pulled back and wetted down besides. She felt . . . less. She felt tamped down. Dim. More faint. Feint. Feigned. Fain. It would have been pure unpleasant without the perfect strip of linen. If not for that, she wouldn’t merely feel like a wick rolled down, she would be downright guttery. It was worth it, doing things the proper way.

Finally the last of her trembling stopped. The fish were still turning in her stomach, but her grin was eager. The golden daylight from above struck down into the pool, straight and bright and steady as a spear.

Auri drew a deep breath, then pushed it out, wriggling her toes. She took another deep breath and let it out more slowly.

Then a third breath. Auri gripped the neck of Foxen’s bottle in one hand, let go of the stone edge of the pool, and dove beneath the water.

The angle of the light was perfect, and Auri saw the first pipetangle clear as anything. Minnow-quick, she turned and glided smoothly through, not letting any of them touch her.

Below that was the second snarl. She pushed an old iron pipe with her foot to keep herself moving downward, then tugged a valve with her free hand as she went past, changing speed and sliding through the narrow space between two wrist-thick copper pipes.

Know what you are buying
By Noah Newsome
First off, if you have not read both Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fear don't even look at this book, go read them. Once you've read them ask yourself, "Am I interested in learning more about the character Auri?" If the answer is no then move along. If the answer is yes you then need to ask yourself if you could read a 177 page book that is nothing but character development about Auri, because that is all this book is.

As many other reviewers, and Rothfuss himself writes in the Foreword and Author's Note, this is not your typical book. Many people will not like this book. If you do not satisfy the above questions then you will not like this book unless you enjoy reading things simply for the poetic aspect of the writing. Rothfuss constantly writes how he wasn't sure what this book was, what niche it satisfies as a book. Many of the people reviewing this say the same thing, both the detractors and the fans. I, however, can tell you why I enjoyed this book: It was simply insight and character development into Auri, one of the more interesting characters in the King Killer Chronicles.

This book is a look into a typical week in Auri's life, what she does with her time, why she does it, how she does it, etc. It does give you some very interesting insight into a few things towards the end of the book, but not enough for anyone who doesn't care about Auri to be worth it to them. There is no real point to it, it does not further the story in any meaningful way, it does not have the typical flow of a story, it simply ends without any real meat to the story.

Do you like Auri? Do you like character development? Do you like words as an art form? If yes, give this book a try. If not move along safely with the knowledge that you did not miss out on anything. I, however, loved this book as much as any part of Name of the Wind or Wise Man's Fear.

Auri's Foot Washing Adventure!
By Daniel Ramos
I'm not sure if i've ever written a book review, I enjoy reading very much and respect the hard work that accomplished authors put into their craft whether it comes out great or just "okay". I was moved to write this, because I want to save others time and suffering. This was a terrible book. I plod through about three pages a day and then spend another thirty minutes questioning my life choices up until that moment. It's that awful and boring.

If you want to read about Auri washing her feet, running into different gibberish named rooms and picking up random bits of garbage RUN don't walk to the bookstore to purchase this short novella for $10. Nothing exciting or significant happens and we learn nothing about Auri that is not already said in the book other than that she has a preoccupation for making strange soaps from scraps she finds in the sewer and then re-washing her feet.

Read The first two books in the main series, Skip this one.
By Terry
I Love Patrick Rothfuss' first two novels. I love the colorful casts, the layers of mysterious, the scenery, and the way he writes. Its more akin to poetry in motion than anything. I'd recommend them to any fantasy/fiction reader. I have many things from that book that I've taken down and added to my list of awesome quotes. Many of my friends agree he could be (if he writes more) one of the best fiction writes currently out.

I did not like this book. I could not finish this book. It is closer to being incoherent than it is to being a thoughtful unique prospective of a troubled girl. And the thing is I really liked Auri in the books. But this was a huge turn off. It makes me shake my head that one of my favorite authors took his time to write this versus working on book 3 that has been long overdue.

Please Pat, no more solo stories until the main one is done. And pick a character who we can actually understand.

DON'T RENT FROM AMAZON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By K
I rented this book because it was $30 cheaper than buying it from the book store with the access code. It clearly states in the Product details "COMES WITH WILEY PLUS ACCESS CODE" My book arrived minus an access code. I talked to 7 different people who told me I should have searched the faqs on book rentals to see that it is not a guarantee. The kept me on hold for half an hour before answering my call and then put me back on hold for another 15 minutes, then hung up on me. The third manager I talked to Thandazwa from the text book department, offered me a gift card for $25 (half the price of purchasing a code from amazon.com). I was so mad last night that I turned her down and hung up. This morning I called back to see what could be done about it. The first woman I talked to her name was Anna in text books. She offered me a $30 dollar credit that couldn't be used to purchase because it had to be a direct from amazon supply purchase. This access code is supplied by Wiley. I asked her if it could be made in to a gift card so I could use it for the code. She transferred me to her manager Dana who wouldn't even give me a credit. Basically told me to go screw myself and that I was stupid for not reading the fine print on a separate page that I would have had to know that it existed.Somehow during all this they started treating me like i was in the wrong for expecting what there website claimed to be true. Dana transferred me to her manager Gary from the West Virginia management office. He told me he could offer me the credit but that was it. I told him that the woman the night before had offered a gift card, and asked him if he had the ability to do that. He said it wasn't the normal procedure, but if it had been offered that he could do it. He called me an hour later to tell me there was no record of the offer! Complete B.S. I relayed word for word what she had said. I even gave him her name! He then told me he couldn't help and hung up on me as I asked how to contact his manager. Moral of the story AMAZON SUCKS!!!!

The best option for broad, basic nutrition courses available now... but still quite imperfect; THE SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL=A MUST!
By LB
While it isn't perfect (no textbook is) and from the sound of things Amazon may be the worst place to buy this (you NEED the supplemental material even if you are not taking the class!!), this has, both in its former edition and this one, been an excellent book for 1st year/level college nutrition courses or even honors/accelerated high school electives for students who do well in biology&math in particular. One thing I enjoy about teaching nutrition in general is that at least in our university, a wide variety of students enroll in my course: medical school students, nursing school students (the highest percent of my students are hoping to become nurses), dental hygiene students, and research-oriented students. It's a massive blend of kids from many years who all come in and, despite many both thinking it will be easy because they've had plenty of classes that SHOULD teach it, are bewildered and, once I start throwing my own 19 years of research and college-plus education, scared. This book isn't the scary part; I'm the one who terrifies them about just what happens when people take Emergen-C and similar substances (heart attack at 25, go, go, go!!!). The book is, frankly, not something that should be read as a standalone work... the teacher really HAS to be there to fill in the gaps... but if you ARE a teacher looking for "the" best nutrition textbook for your first year nursing students, nutritionists-to-be, etc... this is it as far as I am concerned, and I've read a LOT since my background and philosophy in treatment start with how a person treats his or her OWN body, what they put into it over half of the reason for conditions that are not congenital (neurology and clinical psychology with developmental and learning/cognitive disorders, including trauma-induced, a key focus of my practice and research, AUTISTIC spectrum disorders something I'm a bit of a go-to for which means 1)diet 2) environment ie triggers like lighting or sounds and motion that can cause panic or otherwise make them anxious or turn the dial back on progress made thus far 3) social supports 4) diet 5) activities, both at home and outside 6) various therapies, from tactile/motor skills work to biofeedback to cognitive behavioral therapy 7) whole body integrative treatments resulting from head to toe tests, 8 hours of which are JUST to assess neuropsychological function-from spatial reasoning to rote memory and emotional markers I typically use as starting points in finding balance 8)minimal medications for -other- disorders like commonly concurrent epilepsy and 9)diet... did I mention diet?)

The people who ABSOLUTELY need this book? PARENTS! If I were a politician making laws, I'd start right there and throw a ton of money into forcing every human being who dares to rear and raise another--you know, how about being real and saying every human being physically able to be half of the making-of-life phenomena... yeah, I'd force a nutrition course on EVERYONE. Then again, I'd do it from preschool the way it was with me so so long ago when at least my school system cared a lot about everyone becoming healthy physically, academically, and emotionally--right down to our guidance counselor coming for "guidance class" to every class for 1-2 hours a week with individual counseling handled separately (then again I went to school for 90 minutes more than grade school kids do where I currently live, so there was time for such "luxury"). In any case, we're fed SO much garbage--and this book isn't by a long shot a full, complete resource, nor is the information IN it 100% accurate though it comes as close as I've seen anywhere--at least a good professor can give a PRICELESS education in teaching both what is and is not found in this book (which in reading can at least get people grasping the basic way of talking ABOUT the body's use of foods and from there discerning what is really being said in research, etc--it's just as much a language arts book as a science one in some respects, as diets have been, for so long, throwing wrongly used terms at us and making people truly lose sight of things so basic as just what is a calorie and why AREN'T they all the same? Why is fructose so bad and why ISN'T fat your enemy? Why is too much protein going to make your kidneys weep, and why is all that nasty potato starch, corn, and refined flour going to make your liver create fat and bad cholesterol the same way it does with fructose? The questions that matter, ie getting the right nutrients FROM THE RIGHT SOURCES--ie calcium not being absorbed from spinach AND "supplements" with calcium *carbonate* actually making the body absorb LESS of EVERYTHING, hence TUMS leading to so many malnourished senior citizens with frail bones despite ample calcium--of the wrong kind!)...

The book gives the starting points. It's still up to the educator to give VAST amounts of supplemental material that will tackle the *practical* application of the foundation/base knowledge set in the book... The educator is who needs to make students (or other faculty/practitioners, too, since so much knowledge simply wasn't around for the doctors who are now 50-70!) understand things like just what the millionaires/billionaires who created the mythology of multivitamins for Centrum et al are putting IN those scrap rocks-pipes-razors (they are all losing hands) and what happens when you ingest the mess, whether the ground up limestone-copper pipes blends or single-ingredient ways-to-leech-your-body's-real-nutrients--and-maybe-get-a-bonus-of-internal-bleeding-yes-please-more-please. The educator needs to give the students a wake up call in too many respects... understanding that a frightening percentage have already or will at some time develop an eating disorder and even more will diet in ways that are unhealthy, toxic in the long run, it is such a critical field to understand... everyone needs this kind of understanding... I wish this book could cover more "applied" knowledge like nutritional deficiencies that arise from poor lifestyle choices or illnesses, of course, but there's only so much you can do in a hundred level course (or even two hundred level for some schools)... The vast majority of nutritionists barely know more than what is in here, which is scary by itself given the sort of authority they often impose, but if they at least know THIS much, well, they probably need about 3 more years to build on it but at least they should be able to create a diet for a HEALTHY adult... the problem is in too many foods are like ticking time bombs--especially (neurologically toxic, hormonally disruptive as a class of kindergarteners, and heart-destructive) soy, nutritionally void corn, inflammation-welcoming grains-wheat is not just bad for celiac/allergic individuals and those who get bloated, after all; a whole host of autoimmune conditions are exacerbated and sometimes even triggered by foods LIKE wheat and soy; rice causes one of the highest amounts of inflammation because of putrescine and spermidine that it is rich in, so people with conditions like arthritis, lupus, Sjogren's, even acne... shouldn't be consuming it....and the additives we toss in, especially MSG (a strong neurotoxin with addictive properties found in more salty snack food than not and most "broth" and soup--though labeled a dozen different ways like yeast extract and maltodextrin...they are even in diet foods specifically to artificially make people feel full THROUGH the false signals sent to your brain, which aren't JUST altering your appetite!) but also carrageenan, food colorings that are petrol-sourced (caramel coloring the worst, but the make pretty cake frosting and glowing yellow pickles varieties are also horrible!), vanillin, hydrolyzed proteins, stabilizers/shelf life extenders we know little about like rennet-fine for the outside of a wheel of cheese but now we just throw it in the batch in copious amounts so cheese gets cheap and fake, yet often rennet isn't even pointed out!, etc... just because it came from a plant doesn't make something safe, after all... and just because our government throws up megacorp-funded GRAS (generally regarded as safe) labels everywhere, so much so that they do not even have to LIST many ingredients, including "flavorings," it doesn't make eating something for years a good idea (as "GRAS" and other food safety concerns thus far have only been ACUTE impacts... we only learn from rodents and only when Monsanto type companies don't threaten labs with extinction that some things really are lethal in the long run...

The things it doesn't talk about, like what's SAFE and GOOD and UNKNOWN... that is where it really isn't enough. Still, long story short is that it's the most clearly laid out book and one of few in this subject area my students who aren't native English speakers have been able to mostly comprehend. It's right at the border of high school and college material, but that is, as far as marketing and profit go, probably its strength... then again, by the time this level of knowledge is understood, at least for me, the material is research and professor-created lectures... lots to read, lots to print... but not all gathered together like a summary book. Even though the language might be difficult for people who've been out of school, particularly out of science classes, a long time, I'd recommend this for EVERY parent... and I'll remind you a third time: the supplemental material is a MUST.

Great textbook
By Danielle
This is a dense, incredibly informative textbook, but one of my favorite college textbooks so far. Everything is in great detail but there are tons of definitions in the margins and a summary at the end of each chapter for those who prefer to skim. I'm taking my nutrition class online and I find this book to be great for self-study without any lecture. Arrived quickly and in great shape, too!
