Alan's War: The Memories of G.I. Alan Cope, by Emmanuel Guibert

"When I was eighteen, Uncle Sam told me he'd like me to put on a uniform and go off to fight a guy by the name of Adolf. So I did."

When Alan Cope joined the army and went off to fight in World War II, he had no idea what he was getting into. This graphic memoir is the story of his life during wartime, a story told with poignant intimacy and matchless artistry.

Across a generation, a deep friendship blossomed between Alan Cope and author/artist Emmanuel Guibert. From it, Alan's War was born – a graphic novel that is a deeply personal and moving experience, straight from the heart of the Greatest Generation – a unique piece of WWII literature and a ground-breaking graphic memoir.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Guibert writes and draws for American G.I. Alan Cope in this poignant and frank graphic memoir of young soldier who was told to serve his country in WWII and how it changed him forever. When he first enters Fort Knox at 18, he is young and impressionable, more of a dreamer than the military type. Slowly, Cope grows through his experiences in the war. He forges candid friendships with his fellow soldiers and remains ever insightful in his recollections of the war and his life afterward. Together, Cope and Guibert forge a story that resonates with humanity. Guibert's illustrations capture the time period vividly. While the subject matter is familiar from many wartime memoirs, Guibert's fluid, simple but assured linework captures the personalities of Cope and his friends, elevating the material to a far more affecting level. From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up—Cope was a paper delivery boy in California in 1941 when Pearl Harbor was bombed. A couple of years later, at 18, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and shipped off to Europe. In 1994, he met cartoonist Guibert and recounted his wartime experiences and what he'd thought of them during the intervening years. The resulting book—published in France a year after Cope's death in 1999—puts readers nearly inside the skin of a young man who learns to deal with Army regulations, a number of Western cultures, friendships, and what turned out to be a lifelong exploration of life's possible meanings. Guibert allows Cope to speak directly from the pages, where the images he is describing unfold in small, neat panels in which grays, black line, and open white space provide details of expression, furnishings, the open countryside, and military equipment. Guibert and Cope are well matched and compelling as storytellers. There is no central dramatic moment here—Cope's major wartime work involved neither attacks nor defenses—but the complete honesty offers insights and answers often omitted in war stories. Cope becomes so real that, as he ages across the final quarter of the book, teens will stay involved with how his youthful experiences and ideals colored his mature choices and memories.—Francisca Goldsmith, Halifax Public Libraries, Nova Scotia

From Booklist
After churning out a series of popular children’s books, French graphic artist Guibert recently detoured into biography. His chronicle of reporter Didier Lefevre in Afghanistan, The Photographer (in three volumes, so far), won several awards and raised the bar for Guibert’s versatile drawing skills. The unlikely subject of his latest biography is World War II veteran Alan Cope, an American retiree living in France, with whom Guibert developed a close friendship in the early 1990s. Cope’s charismatic demeanor and storytelling penchant gradually put a spell on Guibert, inspiring him to capture Cope’s life in a fascinating tapestry of illustrated anecdotes, reproduced letters, and photographs. Cope, it turns out, saw very little action during his extended European tour in the latter half of the war, yet his peculiar misadventures as a radio operator, tank gunner, and chaplain’s assistant carry their own appeal. His encounters with temperamental officers, friendships with fellow soldiers and German musicians, and struggles to find work in post-war France reveal a fascinating side of wartime life rarely seen in military films or history books. --Carl Hays

An impressionable young soldier travels in Europe just as WWII is ending.
By M. Mackinnon
This is an interesting memoir in graphic novel style. The pictures have an elegant simplicity. A French author, years after the fact, illustrated the stories of a young American G.I. who happened to arrive in Europe just as WWII was ending. He was a sensitive observer, and made some interesting friendships in that curious post-war period. Imagine touring Europe in a tank!

Compelling
By Dave
This is a remarkable book. Guibert's style is immediately engaging -- it sounds corny but it was easy to believe he was speaking directly to me. The art is equally engaging. It supports the story without distracting, and provides a fantastic sense of time and place. They worked together to keep me riveted from cover to cover.

At War with the Army
By Kevin Killian
In an amazing act of cultural sympathy, French cartoonist Emmanuel Guibert befriended the elderly US vert Alan Cope and now proceeds to tell Cope's own story as though Cope was still with us, playing the ventriloquist. Guibert has a finely tuned ear for the enthusiasms and hesitancies of his former friend, and ALAN'S WAR stands as an inspiring tribute to the power of friendship between generations, for you'd have to be awfully sensitive to be able to catch to this degree the nuances of a generation born in the 1920s, not to mention rendering all of Alan's adventures in a complementary, impressionistic panoply of evocative panels. We can almost imagine that Cope wrote this himself!

I heard of this book from my friend, the editor and poet Ben Mazer, who had spread the word that ALAN'S WAR contains a pen-and-ink portrait of our mutual friend, the California writer Landis Everson, one of the original "Berkeley Renaissance" poets of the 1940s. Indeed Landis does appear in some of the brief, postwar sections of the book, when Cope is trying to get his footing back in a society ostensibly at peace, but inwardly seething with the tensions of the Cold War. And it's an interesting take on Landis Everson, but believe me, he plays only a tiny part in this very long saga of war and youth.

Alan Cope himself we get to know well, though there's ultimately a distance he keeps between himself and Guibert. It seems like there's all sorts of things he leaves out. Why for example, his hatred of America? It is said that a companion volume, ALAN'S YOUTH, is to follow, and maybe we'll get some clues about his emotional shutdown. His love of his comrades is a little eye-opening, too, and beyond that Alan seems to have encountered every aggressive gay man in the whole US armed forces. His regret? That he didn't kiss back the brother of a California neighbor who professed his love for him. Other reviewers have noted Alan's tolerance of what were then thought of as sexual deviants. Actually ALAN'S WAR for all it good intentions, and its very real grace, is a little bit boring... But many will love it, and biographers of Pound and henry Miller and Octavio Paz will turn to it for some intrig

Even after 100 years, this is a captivating fable - witty and biting - of a Thomas Edison-like inventor who creates the radiant and tragic android Hadaly, and the lovelorn aristocrat who falls for the manmade perfect woman who is conveniently adjustable so he may make her at his will to his taste and social needs.

entertaining and unexpectedly deep
By amazon customer
Is birdsong still beautiful once it has been scientifically explained as the product of bland mechanical phenomena, acoustic vibrations, and animal tissues, cells, and atoms? Is it better not to know these details, and simply enjoy the sound? Is it better to reject reality and live in a fantastic world of your own imagination? When waking from a dream, it is easy to use reason to convince oneself that the dream was not real. But if the dream made you happy and reality makes you sad, why would you want to do so? Could an escape into dream be so wrong? Even when in a rational state of mind, how much of your perception of the real world is filled in by your imagination, anyways?

Such are the questions addressed in this English translation of Villier's L'Eve Future---Tomorrow's Eve. The novel relates the story of a fictionalized Thomas Edison's efforts to create an Ideal artificial woman to rescue a dear lovesick friend from ending his own life in order to escape loneliness. The Ideal in this case encompasses more than physical beauty; Edison's quest focuses on endowing the machine with a beautiful soul capable of joy, sorrow, love, and an appreciation of the tragic limits faced by all mortals. But how can a machine have such human attributes? Or is it merely necessary for the lonely man simply to believe that it has?

Beneath the novel's strange love story, beneath its adventure into the frontiers of an imaginary 19th-century science, an equally engrossing philosophical argument plays itself out pitting idealism versus practical materialism, spirituality versus rationalism. Who is really the puppet, Edison or his creation? Is the artificial woman actually the product of science, or of the supernatural? Will the lovers' fate ultimately be triumphant or tragic? Tomorrow's Eve is an unusual combination of entertainment and edification.

Decadent masterpiece
By A Customer
This little known novel is a masterpiece of Decadent literature (a brief movement localized in France around the turn of the last century that was influenced mainly by the poetry of Baudelaire and the theories of evolution put forth by Darwin). It tells the story of a fictionalized Edison who builds a female cyborg to exist in place of the unattainable love object of a tortured young man. She is animated by the spirit of a ghost and has the appearance of a Venus statue. Villiers, in the decadent tradition, lauds artifice above "nature," writing characters who traverse the world of illusion as that which is more real than real, a world in which appearance and the material are everything. This book might be of particular interest to feminists: Villiers only writes women as artifical beings, hysterics, ghosts, objects of fetishism. This book is a must read for any one interested in metaphysics and the rhetoric of "image" versus "being."

Excruciatingly slow
By AMH
This novel is hard to read because most of the 220 pages consists of a conversation between the Thomas Edison character and his friend--and Edison is a very verbose speaker. In this conversation Edison is persuading his friend to go along with the idea of replacing his fiancee with Edison's android, who can be made to perfectly resemble the fiancee but who will not be an airhead. The highlight of this dialog is when Edison catalogs a bunch of feminine beauty products to demonstrate that his friend is already dealing with the artifical: "in that case, one artifice for another, why not have the android herself?" Later on Edison makes this statement: "Since our gods and our aspirations are no longer anything but scientific, why shouldn't our loves be so, too? In place of that Eve of the forgotten legend, the legend despised and discredited by Science, I offer you a scientific Eve....In a word, I have come, I, the `Sorcerer of Menlo Park,' as they call me here, to offer the human beings of these new and up-to-date times something better than a false, mediocre, and ever-changing Reality; what I bring is a positive, enchanting, ever-faithful Illusion." This seems very relevant to today, with our browser-mediated lifestyles.
If you are patient, and are not repulsed by full-on Victorian sexism, and can overlook a lack of character development and plot, and won't be irked by a throwaway ending in the last page, then you may find this novel worthwhile. It is one of the earliest science fiction works and can be read for its curiosity value. There are a number of interesting ideas and sparkling moments.

From the Back Cover

This book presents the foundations of theoretical computer science in a format accessible to undergraduate computer science students. Designed to serve as a text for a one-semester introductory course in the theory of computation, the book covers the traditional topics of formal languages, automata, computability, and computational complexity. In his book, Glenn Brookshear encourages students to appreciate the theoretical ideas as the foundation on which real problems are solved, rather than viewing them as unuseable abstractions. Theory of Computation covers regular, context-free, and general phrase-structure languages along with their associated automata, computability in the context of Turing machines, partial recursive functions and simple programming languages, and complexity theory with an introduction to some of the open classification problems relating to the classes P and NP.

Best book ever written on Formal Languages
By Roger Costello
This is the best book ever written on Formal Languages, Automata, and Complexity.

It is obvious that the author is a true master of not only the subject matter but also writing.

I have read many books on the subject and this is without doubt the best that I have ever read.

Here is my evaluation of the books on this subject:

1. (A+) Theory of Computation: Formal Languages, Automata, and Complexity by J. Glenn Brookshear

2. (A) Formal Language: A Practical Introduction by Adam Brooks Webber

3. (A-) Computation: Finite and Infinite Machines (Automatic Computation) by Marvin Minsky

4. (B+) Computability, Complexity, and Languages, Second Edition: Fundamentals of Theoretical Computer Science (Computer Science and Scientific Computing) by Davis, Sigal, and Weyuker

5. (B+) Automata Theory with Modern Applications by James A. Anderson

6. (C-) Introduction to Automata Theory, Languages and Computation (Addison-Wesley series in computer science) by Hopcroft and Ullman

An outstanding and unique book
By Paulo C. Rios Jr.
It was sad for me to learn that this one book is now out-of-print. Back in 1990 when I bought it, it was the very first book to explain some of the most exciting subjects in theory of computation in a way that it is so clear and motivating. When I read it again, the same thoughts come back to my mind. This book is very well written. It is a shame that so many computer science students and researchers may now not have the opportunity to learn from it too.

really great book
By Elias Wolff
this is an excelent book, too bad it's hard to find. Dr brookshear explains very well the theory, without going too deep in not-so-significant subjects, but he does mention them (sometimes in the chapter exercises), so you can look for them on your own.

really worth finding it

WarCraft War of the Ancients Archive, by Richard A. Knaak

Months have passed since the cataclysmic Battle of Mount Hyjal, which put an end to the Burning Legion's invasion. Most Legion forces on Azeroth have been slain or driven into hiding. Yet now a mysterious energy rift in the mountains of Kalimdor propels three heroes to the distant past: the dragon mage Krasus, the human wizard Rhonin, and the weathered orc veteran Broxigar. It is a time long before orcs, humans, or even high elves roamed the world. A time that marks the Legion's first invasion of Azeroth, brought about by Queen Azshara and other night elf nobles. A time when the Dragon Aspects are at the height of their power -- unaware that one of their own will soon turn on the world he was charged to protect.

The Well of Eternity

ONE

The tall, forbidding palace perched atop the very edge of the mountainous cliff, overlooking so precariously the vast, black body of water below that it appeared almost ready to plummet into the latter's dark depths. When first the vast, walled edifice had been constructed, using magic that melded both stone and forest into a single, cohesive form, it had been a wonder to touch the heart of any who saw it. Its towers were trees strengthened by rock, with jutting spires and high, open windows. The walls were volcanic stone raised up, then bound tightly by draping vines and giant roots. The main palace at the center had originally been created by the mystical binding of more than a hundred giant, ancient trees. Bent in together, they had formed the skeleton of the rounded center, over which the stone and vines had been set.

A wonder to touch the hearts of all when first it had been built, now it touched the fears of some. An unsettling aura enshrouded it, one heightened this stormy night. The few who peered at the ancient edifice now quickly averted their gaze.

Those who looked instead to the waters below it found no peace, either. The ebony lake was now in violent, unnatural turmoil. Churning waves as high as the palace rose and fell in the distance, crashing with a roar. Lightning played over its vast body, lightning gold, crimson, or the green of decay. Thunder rumbled like a thousand dragons and those who lived around its shores huddled close, uncertain as to what sort of storm might be unleashed.

On the walls surrounding the palace, ominous guards in forest-green armor and wielding lances and swords glared warily about. They watched not only beyond the walls for foolish trespassers, but on occasion surreptitiously glanced within...particularly at the main tower, where they sensed unpredictable energies at play.

And in that high tower, in a stone chamber sealed from the sight of those outside, tall, narrow figures in iridescent robes of turquoise, embroidered with stylized, silver images of nature, bent over a six-sided pattern written into the floor. At the center of the pattern, symbols in a language archaic even to the wielders flared with lives of their own.

Glittering, silver eyes with no pupils stared out from under the hoods as the night elves muttered the spell. Their dark, violet skin grew covered in sweat as the magic within the pattern amplified. All but one looked weary, ready to succumb to exhaustion. That one, overseeing the casting, watched the process not with silver orbs like the rest, but rather false black ones with streaks of ruby running horizontal along the centers. But despite the false eyes, he noted every detail, every inflection by the others. His long, narrow face, narrow even for an elf, wore an expression of hunger and anticipation as he silently drove them on.

One other watched all of this, drinking in every word and gesture. Seated on a luxurious chair of ivory and leather, her rich, silver hair framing her perfect features and the silken gown -- as golden as her eyes -- doing the same for her exquisite form, she was every inch the vision of a queen. She leaned back against the chair, sipping wine from a golden goblet. Her jeweled bracelets tinkled as her hand moved and the ruby in the tiara she wore glistened in the light of the sorcerous energies the others had summoned.

Now and then her gaze shifted ever so slightly to study the dark-eyed figure, her full lips pursing in something approaching suspicion. Yet, when once he suddenly glanced her way, as if sensing her observation, all suspicion vanished, replaced by a languid smile.

The chanting continued.

The black lake churned madly.

There had been a war and it had ended.

So, Krasus knew, history would eventually record what had happened. Almost lost in that recording would be the countless personal lives destroyed, the lands ravaged, and the near-destruction of the entire mortal world.

Even the memories of dragons are fleeting under such circumstances, the pale, gray-robed figure conceded to himself. He understood that very well, for although to most eyes he resembled a lanky, almost elven figure with hawklike features, silvering hair, and three long scars traveling down his right cheek, he was much more than that. To most, he was known as a wizard, but to a select few he was called Korialstrasz -- a name only a dragon would wear.

Krasus had been born a dragon, a majestic red one, the youngest of the great Alexstrasza's consorts. She, the Aspect of Life, was his dearest companion...yet once again he dragged himself away from her to study the plights and futures of the short-lived races.

In the hidden, rock-hewn abode he had chosen for his new sanctum, Krasus looked over the world of Azeroth. The gleaming emerald crystal enabled him to see whatever land, whatever individual, he desired.

And everywhere that the dragon mage looked, he saw devastation.

It seemed as if it had only been a few years ago when the grotesque, green-skinned behemoths called orcs, who had invaded the world from beyond, were defeated. With their remaining numbers kept in encampments, Krasus had believed the world ready for peace. Yet, that peace had been short-lived. The Alliance -- the human-led coalition that had been the forefront of the resistance -- had immediately begun to crumble, its members vying for power over one another. Part of that had been the fault of dragons -- or the one dragon, Deathwing -- but much had simply been the greed and desire of humans, dwarves, and elves.

Yet, even that would have passed with little concern if not for the coming of the Burning Legion.

Today, Krasus surveyed distant Kalimdor, located on the far side of the sea. Even now, areas of it resembled a land after a terrible volcanic eruption. No life, no semblance of civilization, remained in those areas. It had not been any natural force, however, that had rent the land so. The Burning Legion had left nothing in its wake but death.

The fiery demons had come from a place beyond reality. Magic was what they sought, magic they devoured. Attacking in conjunction with their monstrous pawns, the Undead Scourge, they had thought to lay waste to the world. Yet, they had not counted on the most unlikely alliance of all...

The orcs, once also their puppets, had turned on them. They had joined the humans, elves, dwarves, and dragons to decimate the demonic warriors and ghoulish beasts and push the remnants back into the hellish beyond. Thousands had perished, but the alternative...

The dragon mage snorted. In truth, there had been no alternative.

Krasus waved long, tapering fingers over the orb, summoning a vision of the orcs. The view blurred momentarily, then revealed a mountainous, rocky area farther inland. A harsh land, but one still full of life and capable of supporting the new colonists.

Already, several stone structures had risen in the main settlement, where the Warchief and one of the heroes of the war, Thrall, ruled. The high, rounded edifice that served as his quarters was crude by the standards of any other race, but orcs had a propensity toward basics. Extravagance to an orc was having a permanent place to live at all. They had been nomads or prisoners for so long that the concept of "home" had been all but lost.

Several of the massive, greenish figures tilled a field. Watching the tusked, brutish-looking workers, Krasus marveled at the concept of orc farmers. Thrall, however, was a highly unusual orc and he had readily grasped the ideas that would return stability to his people.

Stability was something the entire world needed badly. With another wave of his hand, the dragon mage dismissed Kalimdor, summoning now a much closer location -- the once proud capital of his favored Dalaran. Ruled by the wizards of the Kirin Tor, the prime wielders of magic, it had been at the forefront of the Alliance's battle against the Burning Legion in Lordaeron and one of the first and most prized targets of the demons in turn.

Dalaran lay half in ruins. The once-proud spires had been all but shattered. The great libraries burned. Countless generations of knowledge had been lost...and with them countless lives. Even the council had suffered badly. Several of those Krasus had counted as friends or at least respected colleagues had been slain. The leadership was in disarray and he knew that he would have to step in to lend a hand. Dalaran needed to speak with one voice, if only to keep what remained of the splintered Alliance intact.

Yet, despite the turmoil and tribulations still ahead, the dragon did have hope. The problems of the world were surmountable ones. No more fear of orcs, no more fear of demons. Azeroth would struggle, but in the end, Krasus not only thought it would survive, he fully believed it would thrive.

He dismissed the emerald crystal and rose. The Dragon Queen, his beloved Alexstrasza, would be awaiting him. She suspected his desire to return to help the mortal world and, of all dragons, she most understood. He would transform to his true self, bid her farewell -- for a time -- and depart before regrets held him back.

His sanctum he had chosen not only for its seclusion, but also for its massiveness. Stepping from the smaller chamber, Krasus entered a toothy cavern whose heights readily matched the now lost towers of Dalaran. An army could have bivouacked in the cavern and not filled it.

Just the right size for a dragon.

Krasus stretched his arms...and as he did, his tapering fingers lengthened farther, becoming taloned. His back arched and from near the shoulders erupted twin growths that quickly transformed into fledgling wings. His long features stretched, turning reptilian.

Throughout all these lesser changes, Krasus's form expanded. He became four, five, even ten times the size of a man and continued to grow. Any semblance to a human or elf quickly faded.

From wizard, Krasus became Korialstrasz, dragon.

But -- in the very mid...

OMG Awesome!
By Casiotone
Somewhat embarrassing admission, given the target audience of this book: I don't have kids.

Somewhat saving argument, given the previous admission: I have a wife who loooves Jim's Pancakes (the site this book is based on).

"OMG Pancakes!" is in this weird place where it's "sort of" a recipe book, "sort of" a set of IKEA instructions, and "sort of" a coffee table book, but work as all three. All of these "sort ofs" add up to one awesome book that turns breakfast into a combination of building blocks and art.

I have yet to have someone take a look at this book and not go, "Oh this is amazing! But how did he... ?" The creations are fun, funny, and the perfect thing to keep around to surprise your kids (or, in my case, your inner-kids).

By Susan Curtin
This is a book that people who live on the west coast, contractors, architects, city planners, and anyone who is advertising themselves as doing earthquake retrofits, should read carefully. Thor Matteson is extremely knowledgeable. This information in this book could save so many lives when the next Cascadia fault earth quake does occur. My hope is Mr. Matteson will indeed be able to create a private non profit course that contractors could take and become accredited as able to do effective earthquake retrofits.
